Carlos González (musician)

Carlos "Sir Charles" González (* 16th June 1955 in Madrid ) is a Spanish drummer of modern jazz , which has emerged as a radio host and music critic.

Life

González hosted the program Y Ahora Jazz on Radio Popular de Madrid FM between 1974 and 1977 . He worked as a critic for Diario ABC and other newspapers. He also wrote the articles on Spanish jazz history for the Enciclopedia del Jazz (1980). As a musician he is self-taught . He first studied computer science at the University of Madrid and only after graduating did he decide to become a professional musician. He first played with various local groups before founding the Neobop quartet in 1982 , with which he dedicated himself to the genre of the same name . With this group he performed at numerous Spanish festivals and was awarded the Dexter Gordon Prize in the 1988 television show Jazz entre amigos . He continued to accompany James Moody , Jim Snidero , Mike Osborne , Ron Jackson , Gene Shimosato, Pedro Iturralde , Doug Raney and, since 1986, regularly Lou Bennett , who nicknamed him Sir Charles and in whose bands he played with Clifford Jordan , Frank Lacy , Pony Poindexter and Éric Barret played.

In 1993 González founded the Milestones Trio , with whom he toured with Jeanne Lee , Bob Mover , Valery Ponomarev , Gary Bartz , Eric Alexander , Grant Stewart, Kirk McDonald and Ricky Ford until 1999 . In the same year he composed the music for the play El Ultimo Sueno . In 2000 he founded the trio BAC with Baldo Martínez and was awarded the Aula 10 prize as a soloist at the Melilla Jazz Festival . He also appeared in the film Atrapada en un blues by Alberto Ruiz Rojo (2001). In 2009 he founded the trio ZAS with saxophonists Marcelo Peralta and Baldo Martínez . He is also involved in albums by Susana Peris , Ramon Leal & Beatrice Binotti , Chema Saiz , Santiago de la Muela , Javier Bercebal and Meli Bernet .
