Carlos Magalhães de Azeredo (born September 7, 1872 in Rio de Janeiro , † November 4, 1963 in Rome ) was a Brazilian diplomat , lawyer, journalist and writer.

Life

Carlos Magalhães de Azeredo was a son of Leopoldina Magalhães de Azeredo and Carlos Magalhães de Azeredo († June 1872). From 1879 to 1880 he studied in Porto at the Colégio de São Carlos , and later at the Colégio São Luís in Itu . In 1884 he wrote the volume of poetry "Inspirações da Infância". In 1889 he corresponded with Joaquim Maria Machado de Assis , who recognized his literary talent. From 1888 to 1893 he earned a Bachelor of Laws at the Faculdade de Direito da Universidade de São Paulo . In 1895 he joined the Itamaraty's foreign service and published articles in the newspapers of São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro.

Diplomatic career

From 1895 to 1896 he was second class legation secretary in Montevideo and from 1895 to 1896 to the Holy See . In 1901 he was promoted to Secretary of the First Class and in 1911 to the Legation Council. In 1912 he was Prime Minister in Havana and was accredited by governments in Central America . From 1913 to 1914 he was Prime Minister in Athens . From 1914 to 1934 he headed the diplomatic mission to the Holy See, which was upgraded to an embassy in 1919.

After his retirement he lived in Rome, where his residence became a meeting place for Brazilian intellectuals in Italy. He was one of the founders of the Academia Brasileira de Letras and was a member of the ninth chair from 1897 to 1963. He was a member of the Brazilian Historical and Geographic Institute, the International Academy of Diplomacy and the Institute for Coimbra. His literary work is extensive and almost unknown in Brazil. Itamar Franco , who was ambassador in Rome, located his notes and was able to hand them over to the Academia Brasileira de Letras in December 2003 .
