Carlos Felipe Peña (born May 17, 1978 in Santo Domingo , Dominican Republic ) is a former baseball player in the MLB . He played as a first baseman in various teams.

Career as a player

Career start

Carlos Peña began his career with the Texas Rangers after his appointment in the first round of the 1998 draft for that franchise. He first played in various farm teams in this franchise and was used in 2001 in 22 games by the Rangers in the MLB. Before the 2002 season he was transferred to the Oakland Athletics , for which he played 40 games, during the season he moved to the Detroit Tigers .

Detroit Tigers

At the Detroit Tigers Peña was immediately a regular player and played 75 games in the second half of the 2002 season. Despite a month-long injury, he was used in 131 games in 2003 and scored 59 RBI in addition to 18 home runs . He increased these values in 2004 in 142 games to 27 home runs and 82 RBI. His batting average was just average at below .250.

When his values dropped at the beginning of the 2005 season (including AVG .181), he was initially transferred to the AAA team, but after his return to the MLB in mid-August, he was able to come up with significantly better values. In total, he had 79 appearances for the Tigers with 18 home runs.

Peña still took part in preparatory training for the 2006 season in Detroit, but was given to the New York Yankees before the start of the season . There he only played games for farm teams until he dissolved his contract and moved to the Boston Red Sox as a free agent . In total, he came to only 18 games in the MLB for the Red Sox.

Tampa Bay Rays

Peña signed a contract with the current Tampa Bay Rays on February 1, 2007 and after poor performance in spring training managed to be nominated for the squad only because of an injury to another player. In the traditionally unsuccessful team, he was able to set numerous personal bests in his first year in 148 missions. His 46 home runs were only surpassed by Alex Rodríguez in the AL , with 121 RBI he was ranked 4th in the AL, and in three other statistics he was at least fifth in the league. Not only did his achievements lead to franchise records, Peña himself was also named AL Comeback Player of the Year .

The 2008 season was personally less successful for Peña from the static offensive data, which was more than offset by the fact that the Rays entered the World Series. Due to his good defensive performance, he was the first player in the Rays to receive a Gold Glove .

In 2009 Peña was first appointed to the MLB All-Star Game by his trainer Joe Maddon . A break of two fingers in September 2009 ended his season prematurely. Despite this injury, he and Mark Teixeira were the AL player with the most home runs (39).

Meanwhile, after a little more than three seasons with the Rays, Peña holds the overall record for walks and only needs seven home runs to take the lead in this category.

Chicago Cubs

In December 2010, Peña signed a one-year contract for $ 10 million with the Chicago Cubs .

Others

Peña has three siblings. His family moved to the United States when he was 14 years old, initially to Cape Cod .

Peña is married and has one daughter.
