Life

Carmelo Colamonico was born on July 27, 1882 in Acquaviva delle Fonti to Ottavio Colamonico and Maria Paola Del Giudice. In his youth he attended high school in Gioia del Colle as a student of the philosophy professor Antonio Lucarelli . His philosophy studies at the University of Naples were particularly encouraged by Filippo Porena , one of the most distinguished geographers of his time. He completed it in 1905 with a thesis on the geography of Puglia .

After returning from Naples, Colamonico took an active part in the social and political life of the city and became a consultant for education. He taught at both the Gioia del Colle high school and the technical institutes of Bari , Foggia and Naples. In 1922 he received the chair for economic geography at the University of Economics and Business in Bari, today the Faculty of Economics at the University of Bari .

Colamonico married Anna Maria Pellerano on October 15, 1923, with whom he had two daughters, and settled in Cassano delle Murge . When he became university professor of geography in 1927, he moved to Naples, from 1942 to 1952 he was dean of the philosophy faculty. During this time he also taught colonial geography at the University of Naples L'Orientale and the University of Naples Suor Orsola Benincasa . From 1947 to 1954 he was a member of the Education Council, became President of the Accademia Pontaniana and from 1963 was a member of the Accademia Nazionale dei Lincei . He was also an honorary member of the Italian Geographical Society, the Accademia Pugliese delle Scienze and the Società Nazionale di Scienze, Lettere e Arti in Napoli. Colamonico worked at the Istituto dell'Enciclopedia Italiana Treccani and became director of the Center for Economic Geography at the Consiglio Nazionale delle Ricerche . He also became chairman of the National Committee for the Carta della utilizzazione del suolo d'Italia, and later director of the Meteorological Observatory of Bari. From 1963 to 1965 he was also a member of the Supreme Council of Academies and Libraries.

Colamonico continued his work and research until 1971 and died on December 31, 1973 in Naples.

Act

From 1908, at the age of 25, he began to publish scientific works and worked on the Studi corologici sulla Puglia , a multi-volume work on studies of the chorology of Apulia. In 1910 he took part in the VII Congresso Geografico Italiano in Palermo , where he referred to his first studies on karst morphology and groundwater hydrography in Puglia. He published the results of his studies on the hydrogeological peculiarities of Apulia in his work Le acque sotterranee in Puglia in 1913. Two years later he published the extensive monograph with La pioggia nella Campania , the results of his studies on rainfall in Campania . Then he began to deal in detail with cartography and in 1921 published the Appunti storici sulla cartografia della Puglia , notes on the history of cartography in Puglia.

Colamonico was also responsible for agricultural and economic geography and published an article in 1922 on the geographical distribution of cultures in the province of Bari. In 1926 he finished his studies on the karst morphology of Apulia, which he carried out mainly in the karst regions of Pulo di Altamura , Pulicchio di Gravina and various karst basins around Murge . He organized the XI. Congresso Geografico Italiano in Naples (1930) and published a four-volume conference protocol. From 1932 he investigated the importance of the frequency of precipitation for the population of the settlements around Murge. In 1939 he illustrated the oldest regional map of Apulia by Jacopo Gastaldi from 1567.

When Colamonico became director of the Center for Economic Geography at the Consiglio Nazionale delle Ricerche, his most important collective work began in 1956 on the publication of the Carta della utilizzazione del suolo d'Italia, which contained 26 high-scale maps in 18 volumes of the Memorie di geografia economica , showing the vegetation Describe Italy. This work enjoyed particular international resonance, so that he was able to gain prominence at the International Geographical Congress in Stockholm and Washington. Colamonico put a special standard on the use of geographic maps in education and therefore issued a variety of maps depicting general and physical geography and history. He had summarized these in 1956 in La geografia nelle scuole secondarie , a geographical school atlas for secondary schools. He had also written textbooks. In 1957 he organized the XVII. Congresso Geografico Italiano in Bari.

In total, Colamonico published over 200 writings and works on southern Italy in his 65 academic years, in particular on the Karst and groundwater hydrography.
