Carmelo Echenagusía

Carmelo Echenagusía Uribe (born April 24, 1932 in Yurreta , Spain ; † November 6, 2008 in Bilbao , Spain) was Roman Catholic auxiliary bishop in the Diocese of Bilbao .

Life

Carmelo Echenagusia Uribe studied theology and philosophy and was ordained priest for the Diocese of Bilbao on June 1, 1953 in the Basilica of Begoña . He taught at the seminary of Derio and graduated from the Pontifical University of Comillas with a degree in canon law . He was then professor of Basque and Canon Law in Derio; he taught in the Basque language . He also taught in the Euskerazaleak club in Bilbao, which was founded in the 1960s . He was a co-founder of the Instituto Diocesano Labayru in Derio.

During the apostolic administration by José María Cirarda Lachiondo , he became general secretary and representative in the episcopate of the sick Bishop Antonio Añoveros Ataún in 1968 . Under Luis Mariano de Larra he was vicar general for nine years . He then completed postgraduate studies in law and theology in Rome. From 1990 to 1995 he headed the parish of Santa María de Begoña.

In 1995 he was appointed titular bishop of Auzegera by Pope John Paul II and appointed auxiliary bishop in the Diocese of Bilbao. He was ordained episcopate on November 9, 1995, by Ricardo Blázquez Pérez , the Bishop of Bilbao ; Co- consecrators were Santiago Martínez Acebes , Archbishop of Burgos, and Fernando Sebastián Aguilar CMF, Archbishop of Pamplona y Tudela.

The age-related resignation of Carmelo Echenagusia Uribe was approved by Pope Benedict XVI. on February 5, 2008. He was succeeded by Mario Iceta Gavicagogeascoa .

In the Spanish Bishops' Conference he became a member of the Episcopal Commission for Liturgy and Migration; He was particularly committed to pastoral care on the street. Carmelo Echenagusia was a corresponding member of the Royal Academy of the Basque Language . He has published five anthologies of Basque literature and many articles on Basque culture in various magazines.
