action

season 1

The story is told in the form of a video diary by the freshman Laura Hollis ( Elise Bauman ). Laura is studying journalism and wants to capture her experiences on campus on video. When her roommate Betty ( Grace Glowicki ) disappears without a trace after a party, Laura is assigned a new roommate, Carmilla Karnstein ( Natasha Negovanlis ). Laura describes this as "broody". Laura, who is supported by her friends, finds out that her former roommate is not the only girl who has disappeared from university without a trace. The season is about Laura's research and her relationship with Carmilla, which evolves from a hostile to a romantic relationship over the course of the series.

Story between seasons

Between the end of the first season and the premiere of the second season, Ellen Simpson, the series' co-writer, posted more information about the story on Twitter. The fictional characters Laura, Carmilla, and LaFontaine have a Twitter account that also exists in the series canon . In this one, the characters speak of supernatural threats from the Styrian and mention that they fled the university campus.

season 2

Season two begins with Laura, Carmilla, LaFontaine and Perry returning to the Silas University campus. Laura investigates the murders of various university journalists. Other strange incidents on campus draw attention to Carmilla's sister - a powerful vampire on the board of directors at Silas University.

New characters:

  • Matska "Mattie" Belmonde (Sophia Walker), Carmilla's adoptive sister, vampire on the board of directors of Silas University.
  • Baron Vordenberg (Ian D. Clark), the descendant of a vampire hunter whose family was murdered by Carmilla 300 years ago.
  • Melanippe "Mel" Callis, a member of the Summer Society fraternity.
  • Theodore "Theo" Straka, a brother in the Zeta Omega Mu fraternity.

Season Zero

While Carmilla and Laura are trapped in a library, they watch videos. The videotapes document the interactions between Carmilla, Perry, and Mel while they are trapped in a room where U by Kotex brand tampons are kept.

season 3

Lilita Morgan - aka the Dean - has usurped power in the university. To make matters worse, she also took over Perry's body. While LaFontaine is desperately trying to find a way to free Perry, Laura is no longer sure if she even wants to intervene. She believes that so far she has done more damage than helping. In the end, however, she joins her friends to stop Lilita Morgan. Laura sacrifices herself and Carmilla becomes human. However, some time later, Carmilla is able to bring her back to life. The two travel around the world for five years until Laura finally receives a mysterious message in which she is asked for help.

During the pre-production of the second season, it was announced that the series would be financially able to support its actors in joining ACTRA. There were also several new actors in the second season.

main characters

  • Laura Hollis ( Elise Bauman ) is the 19-year-old courageous protagonist of the series. She is a journalism student at Silas University. Despite her love for confectionery, Laura is small. As a child, her father forced her to take Krav Maga lessons to learn how to best defend herself. Your overprotective father is still trying to protect his only child. So Laura is happy to live outside of his control on the university campus. Although she seems a bit nerdy and strange, she is lovable and extremely loyal to her friends. Laura loves Harry Potter , Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Doctor Who and is deeply touched when she reads from strong feminine people from the past. Laura doesn't hide her initial dislike for Carmilla. Over time, she realizes what Carmilla really is and falls in love with her. In the second season, the two start a lesbian relationship. It is implied that Laura no longer has a mother.
  • Carmilla Karnstein ( Natasha Negovanlis ) is Laura's new roommate. She was born in Styria in 1680 as Mircalla Karnstein. As the daughter of a count, Carmilla, aged 18, is murdered at a ball and reborn as a vampire. She is the adopted daughter of the director of Silas University, Lilita Morgan (also a vampire), who forces Camilla to bring her girl as offerings to a god she worships. In the 1800s, Carmilla falls in love with Ell, a girl that her mother has chosen to be a victim. Carmilla tries to protect Ell from her mother. When her mother explains to Ell that Carmilla is a vampire, Ell turns away from Carmilla. Carmilla is tortured and locked in a coffin underground for several centuries. During the Second World War , Carmilla is freed when a bomb detonates the coffin from the ground. She is found by her mother and forced again to look for an offering for these girls. She is sent to Silas University by her mother and made Laura Holli's roommate, one of her mother's next victims. However, Carmilla falls in love with Laura and promises Laura that she will do everything possible to protect her from her mother. In the second season, Carmilla has a love affair with Laura. Carmilla is a philosophy student who has a strong will, is sarcastic, often uses Laura's possessions without asking her, constantly leaves her things behind and does not tidy up. She is very strong and quick and can turn into a big black cat.
  • Danny Lawrence ( Sharon Belle ) is a third-semester literature student. She is a member of the University's Summer Society and defends those who are important to her. Danny is athletic and charming. She falls in love with Laura. Laura initially reciprocates these feelings. Laura later finds Danny too overprotective, which reminds her of her father, and Laura falls in love with Carmilla instead. Danny often doesn't get along with Carmilla. She finds them rude and chaotic, but in Laura's interests she tries to suppress these feelings.
  • Susan LaFontaine ( Kaitlyn Alexander ) is studying biology at Silas University and is very good friends with Perry. Susan LaFontaine is just called LaFontaine. If someone uses the first name Susan anyway, LaFontaine corrects this person immediately. LaFotaine sees herself as neither female nor male, but as something in between, and calls the gender identity non-binary (genderqueer) .
  • Lola Perry ( Annie Briggs ) is a German student at Silas University, LaFontaine's roommate, and Laura and Carmilla's roommate. She is just called Perry. Perry is caring and often mothering her friends and fellow students. She has a strong sense of order and believes in science. When she hears that Carmilla is a vampire, she initially doesn't believe it and looks for other explanations for Carmilla's behavior. As a Jew, she celebrates Chanukah . It is implied that she is in love with LaFontaine. The two already know each other from primary school.

Minor characters

  • Wilson Kirsch ( Matt O'Connor ) is a student at Silas University and a member of the Zeta Omega Mu fraternity. Kirsch wants to protect others. When he meets Laura, he describes her as a "Little Nerd" and introduces himself to her as a "Zeta Omega Mu safety companion". He helps Laura find the missing girls. In season 2, he develops feelings for Danny that they don't reciprocate.
  • Will Luce ( Aaron Chartrand ) is a vampire, Kirsch's best friend, and a member of the Zeta Omega Mu fraternity. He is also made a vampire by the director and is Carmilla's little brother. He calls Carmilla 'Kitty', who in turn calls him 'Mama's Boy' because he does everything she says. When he tries to attack Laura, Carmilla protects her. Perry eventually stakes him.
  • Elizabeth "Betty" Spielsdorf ( Grace Glowicki ) is Laura's first roommate. Laura meets Betty as a carefree party girl who is kidnapped by the director. After her disappearance, Laura tries to explain what happened. When Betty is finally rescued, it turns out that she was actually not what Laura first met her. She was brainwashed to go to Silas University. She's actually very neat and intelligent. In her school she was the farewell speaker. Also, she's a little rude after her return and wants to move to Princeton University .
  • Sarah Jane ( Breton Lalama ) is a student at Silas University. Sarah Jane disappears after a party. When she shows up again, she can't remember anything and has turned into a party girl. Sarah Jane goes out with Krisch. When she goes to a party with him, she falls out of a window on the third floor when the director tries to call her over. Sarah Jane dies.
  • Natalie ( Lisa Truong ) is a student at Silas University and one of the girls who disappeared. Just like Sarah Jane, she cannot remember anything when she reappears. She too becomes a party girl and disappears again. Ultimately, however, she is saved by Laura and her friends.
  • Elsie ( Paige Haight ) is a student at Silas University and Carmilla's study friend, who eventually disappears without a trace, but is rescued by Laura and her friends.
  • JP Armitage ( Dillon Taylor / Aaron Chartrand ) is a Silas University student from the 1800s who got sucked into the computer system. JP originally lived in the library, but is taken to Laura's room on a USB stick. He helps Laura and her friends gather information about the director in order to thwart their evil plans. The director destroys the USB stick. However, LaFontaine JP had already backed up on another USB stick. Laura believes LaFontaine and JP are together. However, this is not confirmed by either of the two. During the second season the library disappears and with it JP LaFontaine succeeds in bringing JP back to life, in the body of the vampire Will.
  • Theodore "Theo" Straka ( Shannon Kook ) is a member of the Zeta Omega Mu fraternity. He doesn't get on well with the Summer Society, especially with a member named Mel. He worries about his Zeta brothers.
  • Melanippe "Mel" Callis ( Nicole Stamp ) is a member of the Summer Society. She is ambitious, combative, brave, arrogant and loyal to her Summer Society sisters. Mel doesn't get along well with Danny or the Zetas. She wants to become chairman of the Summer Society, replacing Danny. He accuses her of building a friendship with the Zetas and of being too busy with Laura and Carmilla. She believes that Danny can no longer represent the Summer Society well. When Mel tries to kill Kirsch, Danny saves him, which leads to Mel winning the election as chairman of the Summer Society. Even so, she still takes instructions from Danny, who is the student representative at Silas University. In Season Zero, Mel appears shy and wearing old-fashioned clothes.
  • Matska "Mattie" Belmonde ( Sophia Walker ) is a vampire and a member of the board of directors at Silas University. She was made a vampire by the directors and is Carmilla's older sister. Her relationship with Carmilla is different from her relationship with her mother and other siblings. Carmilla and Mattie are close friends and have stood up for each other for over 300 years. Still, Mattie criticizes Carmilla for her relationship with Laura. When Vordenberg demands the imprisonment of all known vampires, Mattie has to flee. She is killed by Danny who was hired by Laura to do so. Laura, in turn, had heard of it from Carmilla. Mattie's death leads Carmilla to turn away from Laura and her friends.
  • Baron Vordenberg ( Ian D. Clark ) is a member of the Board of Directors of Silas University. At first he appears as a nice old man who wants to support Laura. He hates Carmilla because she murdered his ancestor's family over 300 years ago. He finally orders the imprisonment of all vampires.
  • Sherman Hollis ( Enrico Colantoni ) is Laura's over-concerned father who has seen her vlog and wants to get Laura to safety.

Reviews

“… The cast has incredibly good chemistry, the focus is on a well-thought-out mystery story in which puzzles, laughs, but sometimes a little creep are allowed. Also: lesbian vampires? Halloho and yes please. "

- Kweens.de

“Carmilla is above all entertaining and all the references to series, films and books like Harry Potter, Veronika Mars, Doctor Who, Ghostbusters etc. should make pop culture nerds' hearts beat faster. However, there are always thoughtful undertones. It's about love and friendship, about what you do to keep it and what can break it. "
