The Carmilla Movie is a Canadian vampire film from 2017. It is based on the web series Carmilla , which is based on the novel of the same name by Sheridan Le Fanu . action

The film takes place 5 years after the end of the third and thus last season of the series Carmilla , in which Laura and Carmilla prevented and survived the end of the world. Carmilla, who has just left her vampire existence behind, is getting used to her regained humanity, while Laura continues to devote herself to her journalistic ambitions and social media projects. Unexpectedly, Carmilla shows signs of turning back into a vampire. Then there are strange nightmares from Carmilla's past that plague Laura. Together with their old friends from Silas University, the two of them get to the bottom of the matter in order to save Carmilla's humanity. For this purpose they travel to Styria , to the property where Carmilla once met Elle. Soon the protagonists meet the ghosts of young women from the 19th century, who may seem hostile and threatening, but turn out to be friendly and even invite Laura and the others to a "welcome party". At this party, the ghosts, who are all former victims of Carmilla, reveal that Elle has them trapped in a kind of in-between world and that they need Carmilla's help to finally be able to rest in peace. This should be achieved through a ritual during the party. The ritual goes wrong, however, because Elle had her fingers in the game from the start and had only arranged all events in order to be able to take revenge on Carmilla, who blames her for her fate. (As one also learns, it also caused Carmilla's partial transformation back.) So gradually all the characters are drawn into the intermediate world, where Elle hunts them. Carmilla finally manages to complete the ritual, which, however, allows her to become a vampire again, to defeat Elle and to redeem the other ghosts.

In a post-credit scene, Mattie shows up at Laura and Carmilla's apartment. She tells Carmilla that the frogfish from the series was probably a female and distributed frogfish demigod eggs all over the world that must now be destroyed. Mattie wants Carmilla's help with this. Carmilla agrees immediately, suggesting another film as a sequel.

production

prehistory

The Carmilla Movie is based on the Carmilla web series and is set five years after the series ended. When the end of the web series was announced at New York Comic Con 2016, it was also announced that there would be a Carmilla film. In addition to some actors from the web series, the film added some new actors, including Dominique Provost-Chalkley as Carmilla’s first great love Elle. The film was shot within 14 days and produced by Shaftesbury.

Reviews

Culturess's Kelsey Juntwait thinks The Carmilla Movie is a beautifully written story about love and loss and what someone is willing to give up for a loved one. The success of the film is largely due to the undeniable chemistry between Bauman and Negovanlis. The appearance of Provost-Chalkley as Carmilla's ex-lover Elle delivers absolute tension. With a paranormal and passionate script, Carmilla continues to inspire a franchise that revolutionizes queer storytelling.

Dean Pfeiffer from Easttennessean finds the story rather flat, in contrast to the one in the web series. The plot in the film was difficult to follow and the highlights of the film were drowned in the confusing background stories and plot changes. However, the acting as well as the stage design and allusions to series, films and books contribute to a lively and touching atmosphere. The new characters and Dominique Provost-Chalkley's portrayal as the villain also add significantly to the appeal of the film. The film would also be a first step for those who want more LGBT topics in the media and want to see a good lesbian relationship that young queer teens could easily relate to .

CBC Arts' Peter Knegt believes that viewers must have seen the web series to properly understand the film. Since he hadn't seen any of the episodes in the web series, it was just very difficult for him to follow the plot in the film. To his surprise, the film is not just a lesbian vampire film, but includes many LGBTQ topics. With LaFontaine, for example, there is a non-binary character.

Vox's Aja Romano thinks The Carmilla Movie would be particularly interesting for those who would like to spend a few hours looking at two beautiful women who are happy together in a simple, sweet love story.

Princess Weekes of The Mary Sue thinks the film offers good character development, the chemistry between the two leads crackles and pops. In addition, the secondary characters, especially Mel's, are very strong. The Carmilla Movie is not just a film about vampires, it is also about love, friendship and the power that comes with the fact that someone lives their own truth and fights for the things that matter most to them, even when it is impossible feel.

Karly Ko from Autostraddle thinks that The Carmilla Movie offered her exactly what she always wanted from a film adaptation of a beloved series. She particularly praised the portrayals by Natasha Negovanlis, Elise Bauman and Dominique Provost-Chalkley.
