Carolinenhütte iron foundry
The iron foundry Carolinenhütte is part of the Bavarian Iron Road. As early as the 14th century, hammer mills were built in the region , which also processed the iron deposits in the Kallmünz area. The Lauf hammer mill , which was lost in the 17th century, was located near today's Carolinenhütte . In addition, there are a number of mills and sawmills that are still in operation on the Forellenbach in the direction of Hohenfels .
The Carolinenhütte was founded in 1800. It was named after Caroline von Bechtel , whose husband had the iron foundry and a castle-like villa built above the factory between 1830 and 1832. However, the Carolinenhütte was shut down in 1882 because of strong competition from the Eisenwerk-Gesellschaft Maximilianhütte in Sulzbach-Rosenberg . In 1885, Peter Höllein acquired the company that had been shut down. Since then, the Carolinenhütte has been run as a family business by the 5th generation and has developed into a modern foundry and trading company.
Today the foundry employs around 70 people who manufacture gray cast iron and nodular cast iron products. The Carolinenhütte is one of the oldest still existing iron foundries in Bavaria .
