List of grape varieties

Carricante is an autochthonous white wine variety from southern Italy and is cultivated in Sicily . There is a late maturing variety main ingredient in DOC - white wine Etna bianco . It is mostly blended with the varieties Catarratto Bianco comune , Catarratto Bianco lucido and / or Minnella Bianca . The Carricante variety produces a fresh, straw-yellow, slightly fragrant white wine. The name Carricante comes from the Italian caricare (load, burden) and refers to the variety's high yield. Currently (as of 2001) approx. 810 hectares of vineyards are planted with this grape variety.

Despite similar synonyms, it is not related to the red variety Nocera (which is also called Carricante Nero). See also the article Viticulture in Italy and the list of grape varieties .

Ampelographic varietal characteristics

In ampelography , the habitus is described as follows:

  • The shoot tip is open. It is densely hairy and white-green in color. The green-yellowish young leaves are coated like a cobweb.
  • The medium-sized, almost pentagonal leaves are five-lobed (sometimes three-lobed) and strongly indented (see also the article leaf shape ). The stalk bay is closed like a lyre. The sheet is serrated to a point. The teeth are set closely in comparison to the grape varieties.
  • The cylindrical grape is medium-sized, sometimes shouldered and moderately loose. The slightly elliptical berries are medium-sized and yellow-green in color. The berries are juicy and have a simple taste.

Carricante ripens almost 40–45 days after the Gutedel . It is therefore considered to ripen very late. The vigorous variety produces consistently high yields. Carricante is very productive; If the yield is not limited by cutting back the grapes, the wines will be watery and flat; see also the article vine training . Carricante is susceptible to fungal diseases such as powdery mildew and downy mildew of the grapevine . It is a variety of the noble grapevine ( Vitis vinifera ).
