Carved in Stone is the second studio album by the US singer Vince Neil .

background

Vince Neil had released the album Exposed in 1993 with his new band, which he had formed after his separation from Mötley Crüe and which included Steve Stevens , Dave Marshall ( guitar ), Robbie Crane ( bass ) and Vik Foxx ( drums ) entered the Billboard 200 at number 13 and stayed on the US charts for 13 weeks. In Germany it was only enough for 96th place.

Two years later, circumstances had changed: Neil had suffered a severe blow of fate when his daughter Skylar died on August 15, 1995 of so-called Wilms' tumor , a kidney cancer that occurs in children.

While Exposed still contained “loose, fluffy song material” , which “made the album an extremely party-compatible output” , that changed completely with Carved in Stone. Steve Stevens had left the band and was replaced by Brent Woods, Vince Neil had produced the album together with The Dust Brothers and brought it in a different direction: Industrial sounds dominated the CD, the album hardly received any positive reviews . The German edition of Carved in Stone contained two cover versions, namely Lust for Life by Iggy Pop and 25 or 6 to 4 by the group Chicago .

  US 139 09/30/1995 (1 week)

Carved in Stone debuted at number 139 on the Billboard 200 and immediately disappeared from the charts the following week. Neil's career as a solo artist then slowly but surely fizzled out, and in 1997 he returned to Mötley Crüe.

Stephen Thomas Erlewine of Allmusic wrote: “Neil is experimenting with hip-hop and industrial and has delivered an album that neither an imaginary new audience nor his old fans will enjoy. The album has its moments, whenever Neil sticks to his tried and tested three-chord sleaze metal. On the whole, the album is a letdown. "

Matthias Breusch, who wrote his review for Rock Hard magazine , judged: "Ex-Crüe front hopper Vince Neil" had "put his second solo disc in ruins with the jackhammer" . The album contains “creaky guitar noises at the lower end of the tonal scale and rhythmic variations that are offered by the well-known bag broadcasters twelve times an hour” . In Breusch's opinion, it was "a gigantic misfire" . He came to the conclusion: "Anyone who deliberately ventures into unknown territory must expect their extra tour to be left on the shelves like lead." Breusch awarded 4.5 out of 10 achievable points.
