The Oberbaumgarten Castle, built by Count Andreas Hadik von Futak in 1779, was followed by the amusement establishment built in 1891/92 according to plans by Eugen Sehnal (including a historic ballroom ) in the once extensive castle park , the rooms of which were later used by SPÖ organizations and are now used for a wide variety of events serve as a recording studio.

The outbuilding , built in the 1950s, housed a consumer branch, a 520-seat cinema ( casino , 1953–1968) and a restaurant. In autumn 2014, a kindergarten for Kinderfreunde was opened in the newly renovated building .

History of the structure

The Baumgarten casino was built in 1779 as a palace by General Andreas Hadik von Futak . For some time it was owned by the Princes of Esterházy before it was converted into a casino in the 19th century and the large ballroom was added in 1891/92. Casino Baumgarten came into the possession of the SPÖ through a donation . The current owner is the SPÖ- affiliated Association of Vienna Workers' Homes . In addition to the ballroom , there is an analogue tube sound studio , which is located in the building and is used for sound recordings by the Preiser Records company . Until the opening of the ORF-Zentrum Küniglberg in 1975, the building was an important production facility for early television in Austria. From here, major game shows and live broadcasts were held in front of an audience.

Current and future development

In 2009, a discussion about the casino sparked, as water damage and other construction defects threatened the structure of the structure. The hall was occupied over the summer of 2009.

After the squatting ended, the Preiser Records company was able to move into the premises they had rented. An application for the monument protection of the hall and the facade was submitted to the Federal Monuments Office by the Greens .

After renovation, the building has been used primarily for cultural events and sound recordings since summer 2010. So far, recordings by musicians such as Lang Lang , 2Cellos , Ólafur Arnalds , Elisabeth Kulman , Angelika Kirchschlager , the Vienna Symphony Orchestra and the Vienna-Berlin Chamber Orchestra have taken place. Concerts have also taken place since then, including John Paul Jones , SOHN and the pianist and actor John Tilbury (as part of a Wien Modern concert series curated by Patrick Pulsinger ).
