Caspar Bowden

Caspar Pemberton Scott Bowden (born August 19, 1961 - † July 9, 2015 in Le Midi ) was a British data protection expert and activist. Between 2002 and 2011 he was Privacy Advisor ( chief privacy adviser ) from Microsoft . Since 2011 he has been working as an independent expert. He was director of the Tor project . Bowden advised the European Parliament on data protection and the Internet.

Life

Bowden studied at Magdalene College of Cambridge University mathematics. After graduating, he worked as a freelancer. He later founded the Think Tank Foundation for Information Policy Research (FIPR). He also started working as a mathematician at Goldman Sachs and was an advisor to the Labor Scientist Society , an organization of the Labor Party . In 2002 he moved to Microsoft, where he was responsible for matters relating to privacy. By studying various laws and other regulations, he recognized the monitoring capabilities that these regulations offered. Edward Snowden made the PRISM program public in June 2013 . The program was what Bowden had predicted.

Bowden died on July 9, 2015 at the age of 53 in the south of France of complications from black skin cancer .
