The Cassarate is a 17-kilometer tributary of Lake Lugano in the Swiss canton of Ticino . It drains the Val Colla , runs along its entire course of the river in the municipal area of Lugano and partially forms its border with Capriasca and Canobbio . The river drains an area of around 76 square kilometers and has an average discharge of around 2.6 m³ / s.

The Cassarate rises below the hut Capanna San Lucio directly on the border with Italy and flows to Lugaggia in a south-westerly direction. Here it picks up the Capriasca stream from the right and now flows south. It flows through the city of Lugano in a canalised manner and finally flows into Lake Lugano.
