1- (Dodecylthio) anthraquinone is a chemical compound that is used as Catal's reagent for the sensitive detection of iron (II) sulfate . It is an anthraquinone derivative from the class of thioethers . The reagent was developed in 2019 by the Turkish biologist Tunc Catal.

synthesis

1- (Dodecylthio) anthraquinone is synthesized by reacting 1-chloroanthraquinone with 1-dodecanethiol in ethylene glycol .

use

For use as Catal's reagent, the compound is dissolved in organic solvents such as ethanol , methanol and acetonitrile . The reagent is mixed with the iron (II) sulfate solution to be examined and hydrogen peroxide, and your trisodium citrate solution is added. In the reaction medium, the hydrogen peroxide oxidizes the iron (II) to iron (III) and the thioether to the sulfoxide . The anthraquinone sulfoxide forms an anthraquinone metal complex with the iron. The color change is measured using UV spectroscopy .
