Catharina von Platen

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Catharina (Catharine) von Platen (* in Mecklenburg ; † 1632 probably in Uetersen ) was the prioress of the Uetersen monastery .

Life

She came from the von Platen noble family in Brandenburg . Catharina von Platen was elected head of the Uetersen monastery on July 16, 1614 and was prioress there from 1614 to 1632. She was the successor of her antagonistic predecessor Catrine von Gadendorp , a relative of Sievert von Pogwisch . Their respective annexes in the Convention were also antagonistic to one another. She was a contentious and generally unpopular prioress and made life difficult for the monastery provost Dietrich von Ahlefeldt . Just four months after taking office, Catharina von Platen was involved in major difficulties as " the native Mecklenburg woman who has been in the monastery for 20 years or more ". The widowed Katharina Wedemeier filed a lawsuit " because of rape by the monastery ". She was also accused of having charged the Kurzenmoor farmers with more haulage services and " then arrested and imprisoned the stubborn ". In a protocol in Elmshorn on May 30, 1615, Count Ernst stated that “ he felt the priory was doing something badly ” against him, but he did not know “how he was to blame ”. Further rumors and suspicions followed and Catharina von Platen was accused of " child murder ". On July 5, 1615, von Platen was finally kidnapped from her house in the monastery by two " Claudither " hired by the Kurzenmoor farmers . Shouting " mean swear words against her, " they dragged the prioress out of the house, bumped her into horse-drawn wagons and drove away with her without taking anyone from her servants. They took her, only with the bare essentials, " to a large heath in the Frürsentumb Sachsen " ( Sachsenwald ). A few days later, with the support of her relatives, she returned to the monastery, completely disturbed. Thereupon she brought an action before the ducal Holstein regional court and the Kurzenmoor residents were sentenced to pay 1000 Reichstaler " Satisfaction ". The kidnapping caused a sensation in the country and aroused much ridicule. Her successor was Magdalena von Ucken, she was the last prioress under the Count von Schaumburg.
