Cayara is a town in the Potosí department in the highlands of the South American Andes in Bolivia .
Location in the vicinity
Cayara is the largest place in the canton of Santa Lucia and the second largest in the district ( Bolivian : Municipio ) Yocalla in the province of Tomás Frías . The village is located at an altitude of 3540 m on a tributary of the Río Pilcomayo , the longest western tributary of the Río Paraguay .

Cayara is located on the eastern edge of the Bolivian Altiplano in front of the Andes mountain range of the Cordillera Central .

Due to the historically grown population distribution, the region has a significant proportion of Quechua population, in the Municipio Yocalla 94.5 percent of the population speak the Quechua language.
Hacienda Cayara
One of the oldest haciendas in South America is located in Cayara . It was founded in 1557, just a few years after the city of Potosí, by Don Juan de Pendones. The hacienda played an important role in the administration and politics of the time, as it always belonged to one of the most important families in Potosí. Today the buildings of the hacienda house a museum with exhibits from the colonial era (including the saber of Simón Bolívar ) and an upscale hotel. Agriculture is also practiced.
