Cemil Canalioğlu (born September 21, 1958 in Trabzon ) is a former Turkish football player and coach. Through his many years of work for Trabzonspor , he is associated with this club and viewed by fans and clubs as one of the more important players in club history.

Player career

society

Canalioğlu learned to play football as a street footballer. At the age of 13 he took part in the selection tournament for the youth department of Trabzon 24 Şubat SK through the mediation of an acquaintance and was drafted between 120 participants after this tournament. At this club he played basketball and volleyball in addition to soccer . At the end of the 1970s, Trabzonspor , the strongest club in Trabzon Province , signed Canalioğlu for its youth department. Since a change between clubs in the same city was not allowed at the time, Canalioğlu first had to change to a club in the Rize province and could only work for Trabzonspor six months later. Trabzonspor was promoted to the 1st Lig in the first half of the 1970s and surprisingly became the first Anatolian team to become Turkish champions in the 1st Lig 1975/76 season . After the first championship, the team dominated Turkish football for about a decade and, in its second season, was able to win not only the championship with the Turkish Football Cup and the Supercup but also all other trophies in Turkish football at the time. In the 1977/78 season the championship was missed and as a result a small revision was carried out on the squad. This revision meant that the championship could be won again. Canalioğlu was accepted into the professional squad in the summer of 1980 and completed 18 league games by the end of the season. At the end of the season, his team won the Turkish championship for the third time in a row, which also allowed Canalioğlu to win his first title at club level. In his second season with the pros, he played five competitive games at the start of the season and was out the rest of the season. In the 1982/83 season he immediately won a regular place and ended the season with his team as runner-up.

Despite the good last season, in which Canalioğlu was an undisputed regular player, he was given up to league rivals Antalyaspor in the summer of 1983 . Canalioğlu played here at least until the summer of 1987. The further course of his playing career is not documented.

National team

In 1977 Canalioğlu played once for the Turkish U-18 national team.

Coaching career

After the end of his football player career, Canalioğlu decided to pursue a career as a coach. From 2002 to 2003 he worked at Adanaspor as a youth coach. In this activity he later worked for Trabzonspor and 1461 Trabzon . In 2007 he trained as head coach Arsinspor . In the last few days of the 2008/09 season he also worked as an assistant coach at Trabzonspor. After briefly supervising third division 1461 Trabzon as head coach in 2011, he took over this club again as head coach in November 2013.

In November 2013 Canalioğlu apparently took over Trabzon in 1461 as head coach and unofficially assisted the actual head coach Ayhan Alemdaroğlu . Since the Turkish Football Association declared the UEFA Pro license as a prerequisite for the head coaching activities in its two top divisions, the Süper Lig and the TFF 1st Lig , and Alemdaroğlu, unlike Canalioğlu, did not have this, Canalioğlu was officially hired as head coach and accepted official events such as press conferences. In the media and by the club management, however, Alemdaroğlu was seen as head coach.

End of February 2014 took at Trabzonspor assistant coach Hami Mandıralı of Mustafa Resit Akçay the head coach posting. Since Mandıralı did not have a UEFA Pro license , he could only train the team with a special permit for two game days. Canalioğlu then acted as the official head coach at Trabzonspor and unofficially assisted Mandıralı as his assistant.
