Central Park Tower (also known at 217 West 57th Street or the Nordstrom Tower ) is a super- skyscraper under construction in New York City . Construction work began in July 2014 and should be completed by 2020 at the latest. Adrian Smith was chosen as the architect , who among other things designed the design of the Jeddah Tower . The tower is to be 472 m high. This would make the Nordstrom Tower the second tallest skyscraper in the city and the United States, and the tallest residential building in the world.

Overview

The project was mentioned publicly for the first time in May 2011. From the beginning it was clear that the building would exceed the 300 m mark, as it had around 30 percent more " air rights" than it already had back then One57 (306 m) under construction , also operated by Extell Corp. and is in the immediate vicinity ( 157 West 57th Street ). Future residents of the upper floors (more than 400 m above the ground) would enjoy a unique view of Central Park and the New York skyline . 217 West 57th Street is, as the name suggests, on 57th Street. At the end of June 2015, Extell announced that the project's official name was now Central Park Tower.

At the end of November 2012, DOB ( Department of Buildings - NYC) documents were filed indicating a height of 472 m. Since the DOB only gives the height up to the last occupied floor (i.e. no masts / antennas / roof ridges etc.), one could assume that the tower would be over 500 m high. In the meantime (as of October 2013) the height has been reduced to 434 m. On July 9, 2014, it was announced that the final height of the tower to the top would be 1,775 feet (541 m), only one foot (which is roughly 30 cm) lower than the One World Trade Center .

height

According to information from May 2015, the tower should be 547 m high, with a roof height of 464 m. But in mid-June it was announced that only the roof height is now 464 m, while the building will be 541 m high, as before, making the One World Trade Center the tallest building in New York at 541.3 m.

At the beginning of September 2015 it was announced that the tower will now be built without an antenna mast and that the original roof height of 472 m will be retained.

If you do not take the architectural height, but the current roof height of 472 m (as of January 2017), the Central Park Tower would be by far the tallest building in the city - in front of 111 West 57th Street (438 m), One Vanderbilt Place (427 m ), 432 Park Avenue (426 m), and One World Trade Center (417 m).

use

There are already renderings for the project itself. However, since these are rather fuzzy, the exact design form is also unknown. All that is known is that the US department store and mail order chain Nordstrom is to move into the lower levels . Nordstrom will take up around 23,000 m², roughly one sixth of the total usable area. This also explains the relatively low number of floors for the height of 108 (marketed as 131). It is planned to run this future shopping center as a flagship store . In addition, Nordstrom, as the main tenant, will bear part of the construction costs. Gary Barnett is currently (as of July 2013) in discussions about possible funding. According to various sources, the Bank of China is to provide a loan of over 770 million euros. In total, the total costs for the project should amount to 2.65 billion euros.

The remaining floors function as apartments, with the 107th  floor being the last inhabitable, equipped with a terrace that is freely accessible to all residents . A total of 223 residential units will be built.

Construction work

At the end of 2011, work began on demolishing buildings in the way. At the end of December 2012 there was only one building left to be demolished. In the summer of 2013, the final demolition work was completed to begin with the foundation. Construction is to begin in full in early 2014. On February 19, 2013, approval for the pending foundation work was granted. These started in mid-November 2013 and are expected to take around 18 months. In mid-July 2014, concrete was poured into the foundation. The first reinforcing bars were installed at the beginning of November 2014.

Completion and thus moving into the apartments is planned for 2020. The Nordstrom department store opened on seven floors in November 2019.

The installation of the last steel girders at the top of the tower began in January 2020. The concreting work had already ended a few months earlier in September 2019. At the beginning of February 2020, the final steel elements were lifted into their position and fastened, thus reaching the final height of 472.4 m.
