The building at Manhattanhenge along 57th Street

In December 2008, the construction project was presented to the public under the name of its address 157 West 57th Street . According to official information, the 306 m high building will be completed by the end of 2014. When the construction project was announced, a height of 290 m was initially specified, but this was based on a design that was later discarded. The construction site is located in the north of Midtown Manhattan on 57th Street. The structure will have 79 floors and provide space for residential and hotel facilities. The investment company Aabar Investments from Abu Dhabi , which finances three quarters of the high-rise, was brought in as an investor . Another owner and investor is the Extell Development Corporation from New York. When completed, the skyscraper will be the tallest mixed-use in New York and the tallest reinforced concrete building in the city. Reaching its final height in September 2012, it became the fifth tallest building in New York City after the Empire State Building (381 m), the Bank of America Tower (366 m), the Chrysler Building (319 m) and the New York Times Tower (319 m). In the meantime, however, it has also been lapped by the 541 m high One World Trade Center and 432 Park Avenue with 426 m, making it the seventh highest building in New York. The construction costs amount to around 1.3 billion US dollars . According to the development company Extell Development Corporation, the building will have the tallest penthouse in New York . A price of 50 million US dollars is given for this.

Not far from the construction site are other high-rise buildings such as the CitySpire Center and the Carnegie Hall Tower , but they are lower than One57. Central Park is located a little north of the construction site .

Extell Development Corporation Chairman Gary Barnett announced in May 2010 that the project would be named Carnegie 57 because of its proximity to Carnegie Hall . However, in May 2011 the name of the building was changed to One57 .

Building site

In 2008, an older building on the site was demolished to make way for One57. The construction site was prepared in spring 2009. In December 2009, the preparation of the subsoil began, as well as foundation work on the foundation. In September 2010 the building reached street level and work on the foundation was completed. At the end of September 2010 the first fixed construction crane was erected on the construction site. As early as spring 2011, the construction site had more than 10 floors above ground. In November 2011, the cladding of the facade with the window panes began on the lower floors. In the meantime, the shell of the skyscraper had grown to more than 30 floors. In January 2012, the glass cladding of the facade began on the lower floors. On March 1, 2012, the 50th floor was reached. The structure reached its final height on schedule in September 2012, so that the topping-out ceremony could be celebrated. Meanwhile, work on the facade and interior continued. The structure is scheduled to open in 2014, although no specific date has been given. Although the opening had not yet taken place, the Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat announced the status as completed as early as October 2014, as the work was essentially completed at that time.

Damage after Hurricane Sandy 2012

During Hurricane Sandy on October 29, 2012, the crane was badly damaged the building. The crane arm buckled due to the strong winds. However, there were no injuries in the incident. On the following Monday, November 5th, the crane was secured and the residents and businesses nearby were able to return to their homes and businesses. In response to the crane's collapse, a class action lawsuit was filed by local dentists over the incident that caused them to leave their offices and subsequently suffered loss of income.

In May 2013, Extell announced a new crane. The New York City Department of Buildings plans include a mandatory evacuation of the neighboring Alwyn Court and Briarcliff Apartment buildings while the new crane is being hoisted. Residents of these buildings receive compensation of up to $ 1,500.
