Cephalotaxus koreana is a species of plant fromthe head family (Cephalotaxaceae). Cephalotaxus koreana is often considered to be a subspecies or variety of the Japanese head yew ( Cephalotaxus harringtonia ). It is native to northeast China, the Korean Peninsula and Japan.

Cephalotaxus koreana grows as an upright evergreen shrub that can reach heights of 1 to 3 meters. This shrub grows slowly and is richly branched.

The black-green needles are around 5 inches long and about 0.4 inches wide.

The female cones are red in color when ripe and are edible.

Occurrence

The natural range of Cephalotaxus koreana includes northeastern China, the Korean Peninsula and Japan. In Japan there are deposits on the islands of Hokkaidō and Honshū .

Cephalotaxus koreana thrives at low to medium altitudes.

Cephalotaxus koreana is in the red list of IUCN as a synonym of Cephalotaxus harringtonia out what is considered "not at risk". However, it is known that the species is threatened by land clearing, at least on the Korean Peninsula.

Systematics

The first description as Cephalotaxus koreana was in 1930 by Nakai Takenoshin in Botanical Magazine , Volume 44, Page 510. Cephalotaxus koreana is put in a clade by some authors based on a molecular investigation carried out in 2008 with Cephalotaxus wilsoniana and together with this species as one Variety or subspecies of Cephalotaxus harringtonia treated.
