Chacenay (noble family)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The House of Chacenay was a family of the feudal nobility of the high medieval Champagne in France . His ancestral castle, which gives it its name, is located in today's municipality of Chacenay in the Aube department . It existed from the 11th to the end of the 14th century.

history

In the founding document of Molesme Abbey, dated around 1075, a lady from Chacenay appears for the first time as a witness who was a sister of Hugues de Courteron. To what extent the progenitor of the house, Anséric I. von Chacenay, was related to her, whether as her husband or son, is unknown. Anséric I himself is first mentioned in a document in 1083, as a witness to the confirmation of the foundation of the Molesme Abbey by the Bishop of Langres . The family had held their estates as fiefs of parts of the Counts of Champagne and the Bishops of Langres. Several family members had emerged as participants in crusades in the 12th and 13th centuries. Due to their border location in the south of the county of Champagne directly with the Duchy of Burgundy , the Lords of Chacenay also had political and dynastic connections in this area. In all probability, the lordly family of Montréal ( Dépt. Yonne ) represented a side branch of the family, whose sub-branch of Arcis-sur-Aube (Dépt. Aube) finally inherited the relatives in Chacenay in the middle of the 13th century, after their main line died out was. Montréal Castle was owned by the family in 1254 by a court order from King Louis IX. was lost to the Dukes of Burgundy after their last lord was found guilty of crimes against religious institutions. The last member of the house had died around 1390, after which Chacenay was taken over by their heirs.
