Erhard II of Chacenay

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Erhard II of Chacenay (lat. Erardus de Cachenaio / Airardus de Chassenay / Erardus Chacenaii , French: Érard de Chacenay ; † June 16, 1236 ) was lord of Chacenay ( Chacenay House ) in Champagne . He was the eldest son of Erhard I von Chacenay († 1191) and Mathilde, who presumably belonged to the von Donzy family ( House Semur ).

Life

During the War of Succession in Champagne, Erhard, like many of the country's feudal lords, sided with the pretender Erhard von Brienne against the ruling Countess Blanka and her underage son Theobald IV . His cousins Anséric III. von Montréal and John II of Arcis had joined the survey. Countess Blanka and her son, however, were recognized by the King of France and the Holy See, and consequently Pope Innocent III. on February 4, 1216 called on the church superiors of Champagne to pronounce the excommunication of the supporters of the pretender including the imposition of the interdict on their lands. From Pope Honorius III. this measure was confirmed on December 13 of the same year. The ban on Erhard was finally pronounced by the Bishop of Soissons . After the political balance began to tilt in favor of the ruling countess, the rebellious vassals had gradually submitted to her again. Erhard received a letter dated July 4, 1218 addressed to the Pope, in which he expressed his wish for a reconciliation. In a reply from December 30, 1218, the Pope ordered the lifting of the ban and interdict over Chacenay as soon as Erhard had paid homage to the Countess and her son. However, Erhard had initially not found the opportunity to do so, since he had embarked on the Damiette (fifth crusade) crusade , presumably as an act of penance . In July 1219 he is attested in front of the Egyptian port city when he made a donation there in favor of the Teutonic Knights . It was not until November 1, 1220 that the bishop of Soissons was able to accept Erhard again into the Christian community after he had taken the required oath of homage to the countess.

After his death Erhard I was buried in Clairvaux Abbey .

Marriage and offspring

In 1205 he married Emelina von Broyes († 1249), the widow of Eudes II. De Champlitte . They had the following children:

  • Erhard III. († 1253), Lord of Chacenay, successor of Erhard II.
