Sopo Chalwaschi ( Georgian სოფო ხალვაში [ 'sɔpʰɔ' xalvaʃi ]; born May 31, 1986 in Batumi ) is a Georgian singer of Lasa descent. She was the first Georgian to represent her country at the Eurovision Song Contest 2007 (ESC) in Helsinki and reached 12th place in the final with her song Visionary Dream from the album My Story .

Life

She comes from a Lasi family and grew up in Batumi. The parents discovered their musical talent at an early age. She attended the conservatory, studied oboe and piano , sang mezzo-soprano . In 2003 and 2004, Chalwaschi was awarded prizes for playing the piano and singing at Georgian youth competitions. In the Latvian talent show New Wave 2006 in Jūrmala she took third place. She then signed a contract with the Russian agency ARS and worked as a presenter on a casting show for the Georgian private broadcaster Imedi TV .

In December 2006, Khalwashi was selected by the Georgian Public Broadcasting Corporation (SSM) to be the first Georgian to take part in the semifinals of the 2007 Eurovision Song Contest in Helsinki. Your song for the Eurovision Song Contest was determined on March 3, 2007 in a television vote from five songs. The folkloric dance-pop song My Story prevailed with 51% of the vote . It was performed in Helsinki under the title Visionary Dream . The latter is also the name of a 2007 released music album Chalwaschis.

At the Eurovision Song Contest she was managed by the Ukrainian PR company CFC , which in 2004 already looked after the Ukrainian ESC winner Ruslana Lyschytschko . CFC used Chalwashi's participation to establish Georgia as a brand through nation branding . The stage show was therefore coordinated with the colors of the flag of Georgia , tourist views of the country and characters from the Georgian alphabet were shown in the background, and a saber dance was performed around the singer . The Georgian contribution managed to qualify in the ESC semi-finals on May 10th for the final two days later, where Chalwaschi took twelfth place.
