Champions League Twenty20 2009

The Champions League Twenty20 was an international Twenty20 cricket competition held between clubs from India , Australia , England , South Africa , Sri Lanka , New Zealand and the West Indies . The tournament in 2009 was the first major international cricket tournament of its kind for club teams and took place from October 8th to 23rd, 2009 in India. The Indian cricket association BCCI (Board of Control for Cricket in India) was also in charge of the tournament. It was sponsored by the Indian telecommunications company Bharti Airtel .

prehistory

The competition was launched in 2008 in response to the global success of this new form of cricket, particularly the Indian Premier League . The first tournament was supposed to take place in India from the end of September to the beginning of October 2008, but was initially postponed, then a second time after the terrorist attacks in Mumbai (Bombay) in November 2008 , and finally canceled for the 2008 season become.

qualification

The original planning for 2008 was for eight teams, this number was increased to 12 for 2009. The Pakistani Twenty20 Champion (Sialkot Stallions) was not allowed to enter India due to a travel ban imposed by the Pakistani government. Apart from Pakistan, Bangladesh and Zimbabwe were the only full members of the ICC who were not represented by teams. The participating teams had qualified through their national Twenty20 championships, India provided three participants, England, Australia and South Africa two each, New Zealand, Sri Lanka and the West Indies one each. The games took place in Delhi , Hyderabad and Bangalore .
