Charles Christie Graham

Charles Christie Graham (born April 22, 1835 in Cupar , Fifeshire , Scotland , † December 27, 1915 in Dunedin , New Zealand ) was a Scottish-born New Zealand businessman, farmer and politician from the province of Otago , South Island , New Zealand.

Early life

Charles Christie Graham was born in Cupar , County Fifeshire in Scotland on April 22, 1835, the son of surgeon James Moore Graham and his wife Mary Christie , and was baptized on June 8, 1835. He received his education at Madras College in St Andrews and later moved to the University of Edinburgh .

Australia

In 1855 she emigrated to Victoria , Australia , where she worked as a merchant and in rural areas. Together with his brother Edward Graham , he ran the Graham Brothers & Company in Melbourne from 1858 to 1870 and married his wife Jemima Frances Webster on October 11, 1860 in St. Peter's Church in Melbourne , with whom he later had five sons and six daughters should have.

New Zealand

At the end of 1866 he moved to New Zealand, where he settled in the area between Ben Lomond ( 1052  m ) and the Waitaki River in northern Otago and initially became a sheep farmer. From 1869 to 1871 he represented the constituency of Oamaru in the House of Representatives and eventually gave up his sheep farm in order to earn a living by producing flax on the Rangitikei River on the North Island . There he ran for a seat on the council of the then Wellington Province , represented the district of Rangitikei and chaired several committees. After his flax cultivation venture failed, he moved to Wellington , where he worked as a clerk for the city, became a member of the Education Board , and was Secretary of Wellington College . In 1883 he was appointed magistrate of Wellington and official plenipotentiary for Napier , Nelson , Marlborough and Westland .

In 1893 Graham moved to Dunedin . There he became a member of the first Otago University Council (Council of the University) and was involved in the Anglican Church , whose chairman of the synod he was.

Graham died on December 27, 1915 at his home on Heriot Row in Dunedin and was buried in the Andersons Bay cemetery .
