Charles H. Schneer (born May 5, 1920 in Norfolk , USA ; † January 21, 2009 in Boca Raton , USA) was an American film producer .

Career

Schneer spent his youth in Mount Vernon and studied at Columbia University in New York . During the Second World War he served on Long Island in the Photographic Unit of the US Army Signal Corps , where he produced educational films. After the war ended, he moved to Hollywood and was hired as a producer at Columbia .

Ray Harryhausen's stop-motion work in the movie Panic in New York impressed him and he wanted to make a similar film with him. The result was The Lurker Below and was the beginning of good cooperation, which lasted until his resignation from the film. With Harryhausen he shared his interest in fantasy films. In addition to the financial aspects, he was responsible for the real scenes and was the source of ideas for Harryhausen's work. Schneer was already considering a color film for 1957, but Harryhausen was not able to solve the technical difficulties satisfactorily until Sindbad's 7th trip . In order to save costs, the film was shot partly in Europe since 1957 and completely since 1960. He marketed the stop-motion process further developed by Harryhausen in the color films as Dynamation, SuperDynamation and Dynarama. After Columbia no longer extended the contract with Harryhausen after eight productions were stretched for The Valley of Gwangi with the Bros. Warner together. Back to Columbia two more Sindbad films were made. He made his last film Clash of the Titans with Harryhausen for MGM . In addition to working with Harryhausen, he also produced war films and westerns.

Schneer moved to London in 1960 , where he was a member of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences . Due to his deteriorating health, he moved to Florida in 2005, where he died in a nursing home in 2009 at the age of 88.
