Charles Wilda (born December 20, 1854 in Vienna as Karl Wilda ; † June 11, 1907 ibid) was an Austrian painter of Viennese orientalism .

Life

Charles Wilda, older brother of the painter Gottfried Wilda (1862–1922), studied as a pupil of the painter Leopold Carl Müller at the Vienna Academy . Together with Hans Makart and Leopold Müller, known as Egypt-Müller , he belongs to the center of Austrian oriental painting , a special topic within genre painting that he had got to know from Müller, who in turn learned to appreciate the oriental genre in Paris from the French painter Eugène Fromentin .

Wilda is considered to be the most independent of Müller's students. Müller wrote in his travel reports, "His [Wilda's] ... genre pictures are characterized by precise observation and elegant presentation, their colorism has more shine than power, more shimmer than flicker ...". The respected Viennese art critic Ludwig Hevesi judged him in 1903: "In more recent times, Müller has found an excellent successor in Karl Wilda ...".

Daily life in Cairo, where he often stayed, played the most important role in his pictures. His pictures have titles such as “The Snake Charmer” or “The Storyteller”. In 1892 he went on a trip to Egypt with the sculptor Arthur Strasser , who also found inspiration for his artistic work.

Since the 1880s he exhibited almost regularly at the Vienna Annual Exhibition , the Berlin International Art Exhibition , the Munich Annual Exhibition and the Dresden International Art Exhibition . At the World Exhibition in Paris in 1900 he was also represented with some of his works. His signature variants are CW , C. Wilda and Ch. Wilda .

The oriental painter Rudolf Swoboda , his former fellow student, painted another portrait of Wilda in the year of his death. The Künstlerhaus Wien honored him in the autumn exhibition of 1907 with a memorial exhibition in which 50 works, almost all of them in oil on canvas, were shown.
