Charles-Antoine-Ghislain (Karel) Count de Merode-Westerloo, 10th Margrave of Westerlo, 7th Prince of Rubempré and 4th Prince of Grimbergen (born August 1, 1824 in Everberg , Flemish Brabant , Belgium , † April 6 1892 in Brussels ) was a Belgian diplomat , politician of the Catholic Party and President of the Belgian Senate .

biography

He came from the noble family de Merode . His father was the philosopher and senator Henri de Merode and the eldest of four brothers, all of whom played an instrumental role in establishing the Kingdom of Belgium. The other brothers were the war minister and minister without portfolio Félix de Mérode , Frédéric de Merode , who died in the battles for the Belgian Revolution , and Werner de Merode , member of the first national congress and the Chamber of Deputies . His mother was Louise Jeanne de Thézan du Poujol (born January 14, 1805, † April 27, 1862).

After the death of his father in 1847, he became the landowner and owner of Westerlo Castle. He was also active as a diplomat and envoy and plenipotentiary minister in Spain . After his return he became a member of the Chamber of Deputies and later of the Senate . In addition, he was mayor of Westerlo between 1879 and 1892 .

He was last President of the Senate from November 10, 1885 until his death. For his services he was awarded the honorary title of Minister of State on June 9, 1890, together with Théophile de Lantsheere and Henri t'Kint de Roodenbeke .

He married Princess Marie von Arenberg on October 8, 1849 in Paris (* November 15, 1830, † June 11, 1905). The couple had several children:
