Charles de Valois (born April 28, 1573 at Le Fayet Castle in Barraux , † September 24, 1650 in Paris ) was a member of the Valois family , Duke of Auvergne and Duke of Angoulême .

Life

Charles was a son of Charles IX born out of wedlock. and his lover Marie Touchet . He first led the title of Count of Auvergne , 1580 United became prior of France and in 1586 commendatory of the abbey of La Chaise-Dieu . From 1588 (until 1589) and a second time in 1618 (until 1618) he was Colonel général of the light cavalry.

Charles was considered a follower of Henry IV , but was imprisoned for several months in 1601 because of a conspiracy in which he was involved with the Dukes of Savoy , Biron and Bouillon . The aim was to marry the king to Charles' half-sister Catherine Henriette de Balzac d'Entragues .

For conspiracy with Philip II of Spain against the crown, he was sentenced to death in 1605, pardoned to life imprisonment and finally released again in 1616.

Under Louis XIII. In 1617 he besieged Soissons , in 1619 he was made Duke of Penthièvre and in 1620 Duke of Angoulême, went to Emperor Ferdinand II as envoy in 1620 , commanded La Rochelle in 1628 and fought with distinction in Languedoc and in Germany and Flanders . In 1635 he became general of the French army, a year later lieutenant general .

Charles was married to Charlotte de Montmorency (1572–1636), Countess of de Fleix , daughter of Henri I de Montmorency (family list of Montmorency ), with whom he had the following children:

His second marriage was in 1644 with Françoise de Nargonne (1622-1713). He also left two illegitimate daughters with Isabelle de Crecy.
