Charlotte Diede (* 12. May 1769 in Lüdenhausen ; † 16 July 1846 in Kassel ) was the pen pal of Wilhelm von Humboldt .

Life

Charlotte Diede was the daughter of the pastor and superintendent Friedrich Ernst Hildebrand . In 1788, in Pyrmont , she met Wilhelm von Humboldt, who was then a student in Göttingen. They spent three days together in Pyrmont, which were characterized by intensive discussions. After these days, they had no contact for many years.

In 1789 she got married to the High Court Procurator Diede in Kassel, but they separated again after three years.

After she had lost her invested assets as a result of the war unrest caused by Napoléon Bonaparte , she turned to Humboldt for advice in 1814, who at that time was present at the Congress of Vienna as Prussian minister . Humboldt supported her and stayed in correspondence with her until his death. The King of Prussia later granted her a pension .

Humboldt's classic letters to her were published after her death by Therese von Bacheracht under the title Letters to a Friend . There were also letters from Charlotte Diede, Wilhelm von Humboldt's friend, to Karl Schulz (Leipzig 1883), brother of Humboldt's secretary.
