Chelsea is a small town in the district of Tama County in the US -amerikanischen State Iowa . At the 2010 census , Chelsea had 267 residents. The city is located in the Iowa River valley and has suffered severe damage from multiple floods.

history

In the early 1860s, the Chicago, Iowa & Nebraska Railroad (CI&N) built a railway line from Cedar Rapids to the west. At the end of 1861 the line had reached the east bank of the Otter Creek about a kilometer east of today's Chelsea , where a temporary train station was set up. During the further construction to the west, the station was set up at the current location, where a small settlement was built.

In 1862 a post office was set up under the name Chelsea. Chelsea was formally founded in 1863 and promoted to City in 1878 . It was named after Chelsea, Massachusetts ; according to other sources, directly to the London borough of Chelsea .

The CI&N became part of the Chicago & North Western Railway (C&NW) in 1864 , which in turn was taken over by the Union Pacific Railroad (UP) in 1995 . For the C&NW and the UP, the double-track railway line running through Chelsea is an important east-west connection.

Chelsea is located on the original route of the Lincoln Highway , which is there under the designation E66 and is in the jurisdiction of the county.

Chelsea lies in the flood plain of the Iowa River Valley and is surrounded by hills that are partially forested.

According to the United States Census Bureau , the city has a total area of ​​1.01 square miles (2.62 km 2 ), all of which is land.

As of the 2010 census , there were 267 people in 94 households and 60 families in Chelsea. The population density was 102.1 inhabitants per square kilometer.

The median age in the city was 30.8 years. 29.6% of the population were under 18 years old; 12.7% were between 18 and 24 years old; 25.1% were between 25 and 44 years old; 20.9% were between 45 and 64 years old; and 11.6% were 65 years of age or older. 48.3% of the population were female.
