The Schönebecker Sportclub 1861 was a German sports club based in the town of Schönebeck, south of Magdeburg . Like the local rival Schönebecker SV 1861 , the club was one of the two largest sports clubs in the city.

Club history

Schönebecker SC was based in the Schönebecker district of Salzelmen. Two kilometers to the east were the sports facilities of the Schönebecker Sportverein 1861 . The almost identical name is not accidental, but comes from the common history of both clubs, which together refer to their roots in the men's gymnastics club founded in 1861. The separation took place only after the Second World War , when all clubs had to be dissolved. In the first post-war years, competitive sports could only be carried out at the local city or district level with loosely formed sports communities. In Schönebeck, such communities emerged in the individual districts, including SG Neustadt as the predecessor of Schönebecker SC. After the founding of the GDR , the sports company was reorganized into company sports associations (BSG) , and industrial companies and state institutions took over the sponsorship of the previous sports associations. The most important carrier company for the SG Neustadt was the explosives factory Schönebeck, which gave its BSG the name "Chemistry Schönebeck". Thanks to the economically strong partner, the BSG Chemie developed into one of the most efficient sports clubs in town. As early as 1955, sport was offered to the 876 members in 15 different sections. Gymnastics and table tennis were among the most successful sections. The gymnasts produced Holger Behrendt , who became Olympic champion in 1988. The table tennis section had its peak in the early 1980s. Karin Kromnik and Dagmar Mestchen became GDR table tennis champions, and the women's team was GDR runner-up in 1983. In 1990 the company sports association had to dissolve, because as a result of the change in economic conditions caused by the fall of 1989 , the carrier company system collapsed. Instead of the BSG, the Schönebecker Sportclub 1861 e. V. founded. Thanks to careful management, the club was able to maintain its outstanding position in Schönebeck's sports life and offers sports such as football, volleyball, athletics, rowing, gymnastics, tennis and table tennis. With its 1998 refurbished stadium on Magdeburger Strasse, it has a sports facility that can be used for football as well as athletes. With effect from July 1, 2016, Schönebecker SC was merged into Schönebecker SV, which subsequently changed its name to Union 1861 Schönebeck .

Club coat of arms of the BSG Chemie

BSG Chemie was one of the founding teams of the Magdeburg District League, which was introduced in 1952. She was first district champion in 1953, but just like 1956, she missed the higher division in the promotion games. It was not until 1959 that the company was promoted to the third-class II. GDR League. But you could only hold out here for a season. This was followed by another nine years in the district league before even relegation to the fourth-tier district class had to be accepted in 1970. Four years later the team had so much substance that after the promotion in 1976 the 2nd and 1977 the 1st place in the district league could be fought. The district championship qualified for promotion to the second-rate GDR league, but this time it was only enough for a one-year guest appearance for the 1977/78 season. In 1980 it was possible to play second class again for a year, after which it remained in the third class district league Magdeburg until the end of GDR football, in recent years only with lower ranks. In 2007, the Schönebecker SC team played in the 7th DFB-Liga Landesklasse Sachsen-Anhalt. In 2008 he was promoted to the Landesliga Sachsen-Anhalt (7th division in the DFB area), and in 2013 was promoted to the association league . The season 2015/16 ended the Schönebecker SC in the association league on the relegation place 16.

League statistics
