Chen Chuangtian ( Chinese  陈 创 天 , Pinyin Chén Chuàngtiān ; Chuang-Tian Chen born February 18, 1937 , Fenghua , Zhejiang , China; died October 31, 2018 in Beijing ) was a Chinese materials scientist and researcher in physical chemistry who focused on lasers -Crystals. He discovered the crystals with non-linear optics BBO , LBO and potassium beryllium fluoroborate (KBBF), which are particularly important for use in superconductor research, semiconductor photolithography and the medical industry. He was a member of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (中国科学院) and the Academy of Sciences for the Developing World . He was awarded the TWAS Prize of the Academy of Sciences for the Developing World in Chemistry , the Chinese State Technology Innovation Prize (first class, 国家 科学 技术 奖励) and the Laudise Prize .

Life

Chen was born on February 18, 1937 in Fenghua , Zhejiang , China. He graduated from Shenyang No. 2 High School and received a place in the Department of Physics of Peking University in August 1956. After his graduation in 1962 he went to the Fujian Institute of Research on the Structure of Matter in Fuzhou on the recommendation of Hu Ning , where he spent three years under the physics Chemist Lu Jiaxi worked.

In 1965, Chen chose materials with nonlinear optical properties as a research direction and spent the next two years calculating the nonlinear optical coefficients of numerous crystals. In the late 1970s and 1980s, Chen and his team discovered the crystals BaB 2 O 4 (barium borate, BBO) and LiB 3 O 5 (lithium triborate, LBO).

From 1988 onwards, Chen and his team began looking for optical compounds that could produce shorter ultraviolet waves. After researching hundreds of crystals, they discovered potassium beryllium fluoroborate (KBBF), a nonlinear optical crystal that can generate light in a very narrow bandwidth, with wavelengths of less than 200 nm. The crystal plays an important role in superconductor research and allows one Replacement of excimer lasers by solid-state lasers in photolithography and thereby an improvement in semiconductors and work steps in the medical industries. Until about 2009, Chen's laboratory at the Fujian Institute of Research on the Structure of Matter was the only one in the world that was able to produce KBBF. 2013 invented Chen together with Xu Zuyan (许祖彦) DUV DPL Device ( "deep ultra violet diode-pumped solid-state laser" - deep-ultraviolet solid state laser ) having a wavelength of 177.3 nm only.

Chen died in Beijing on October 31, 2018, at the age of 81.

Honors

His honors included admission to The World Academy of Sciences in 1990 and the Chinese Academy of Sciences in 2003.

In 1987, Chen received the TWAS Prize in Chemistry, "for his outstanding contribution to the development of new nonlinear optical materials, the formulation of a quantum chemical theory that guides the search for such materials and the discovery of beta barium borate and lithium triborate" (For his outstanding contributions to the development of nonlinear optical materials, the formulation of quantum chemical theories leading the research on such materials and the discovery of BBO and LBO). He also won a special prize from the Chinese Academy of Sciences Science and Technology Progress Award in 1986 for his discovery of BBO and the 1991 State Technology Innovation Award (first class; 国家 科学 技术 奖励, guójiā kēxué jìshù jiǎnglì) for LBO. In 2013 he received the Laudise Prize from the International Organization for Crystal Growth .
