Chen Zhu ( Chinese  陈竺 ; born August 17, 1953 near Shanghai ) is a Chinese hematologist , molecular biologist and former Minister of Health of the People's Republic of China . He is chairman of the Chinese Democratic Party of Peasants and Workers and holds a professorship at the School of Medicine at Jiaotong University in Shanghai.

Chen Zhu was born near Shanghai on August 17th, 1953. His ancestors' hometown is Zhenjiang in Jiangsu Province . In September 1981 he obtained a master’s degree from Shanghai Jiaotong University. After completing his doctorate at the University of Paris-Diderot , he completed his medical training and post-doctorate at his university hospital.

Chen was President of the Hematology Institute and General Director of China Human Genome Center (South) in Shanghai. In 2007, he became Vice President of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS). Until 2010, he was the only minister of the People's Republic of China not belonging to the Chinese Communist Party .

He has a son with his wife, Chen Saijuan, also a student of Zhen-Yi Wang and a hematologist.

In addition to a membership as an academic in the Chinese Academy of Sciences , Chen is a foreign member of the US National Academy of Sciences , the French Academy of Sciences and the US Institute of Medicine . He is also a member of the Academy of Sciences for the Developing World and the Academia Europaea . In 2017 he was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences .

He received the State Scientific and Technological Award from the Chinese government . He was the first non-French winner of the Prix ​​de l'Qise of the French La Ligue nationale contre le cancer .

In 2002 he was awarded the Legion of Honor of the French government. In 2005 he was awarded an honorary doctorate in science from the University of Hong Kong , the Prix ​​International de l'INSERM in 2006 , the Szent-Györgyi Prize in 2012 , the Sjöberg Prize with Anne Dejean and Hugues de Thé in 2018 for the elucidation of molecular mechanisms and the development of a “ revolutionary therapy ”(laudation) for the rare promyelocytic leukemia .
