Chikila is a genus of caecilians , it is the only genus within the so monotype , family Chikilidae . This was described as a new familyin 2012 on the basis of molecular biological studies.
features
Like the genera Boulengerula and Herpele from the sister family of the Herpelidae, Chikila does not have a septomaxilla in the area of the nostrils. Like these two genera, it has perforated stirrups . It differs from them, however, in that the frontal , behind the sphenoid and ethmoid bone , does not contribute to the roof of the cerebral shell, that they only have an undivided foramen opposite the ear opening. They also have two rows of teeth in the lower jaw and no prefrontals .
The species lay eggs with direct development.
Systematics
The only described species of the family and thus the type species of the genus Chikila was at the time of the description of the family Chikila fulleri (previously Herpele fulleri Alcock, 1904 ). In addition, several previously undescribed Chikila species belong to the family , which are phylogenetically more closely related to this type than to Herpele squalostoma, which is native to Africa . In 2013 three more species were described with Chikila alcocki , C. darlong and C. gaiduwani .
Occurrence
Chikila species are relatively common in the northeastern Indian states of Arunachal Pradesh , Assam , Meghalaya , Nagaland, and Tripura .
