Chris Wingert (born June 16, 1982 in Babylon , New York ) is an American football player .
The defender will play for New York City FC from the 2015 MLS season .
Career
college
Wingert attended St. John the Baptist Diocesan High School in West Islip, New York . In 2000 he moved to St. John's University in New York City , where he played college soccer for the local college team St. John's Red Storm . In 2003 he won the Hermann Trophy as the best college player in the USA.
In addition to college, he played for the former Brooklyn Knights soccer team in the USL Premier Development League .
professional
In the MLS SuperDraft 2004, Wingert was selected in 12th place by the Columbus crew in the second round. In the next two years he was able to assert himself with the crew and was versatile in defense and defensive midfield. On January 20, 2006 Wingert and his teammate Matt Jordan were transferred to the Colorado Rapids in exchange for additional draft places. After two years he moved again to Real Salt Lake . There he played for the next seven years.
At the end of the 2014 season, Wingert entered the MLS Expansion Draft for New York City FC. He was selected and will play for the new Major League Soccer franchise from the 2015 season .
National team
On January 24, 2009 Wingert completed his first international match against Sweden .
