Christian Alfred Giesecke (born April 16, 1868 in Leipzig , † November 16, 1945 in Friedrichroda ) was a German publisher .

Life

Giesecke was born as the son of Bruno Giesecke in Leipzig. On his mother's side he is a great-grandson of Benedictus Gotthelf Teubner . He studied at the St. Thomas School in Leipzig , studied classical philology and a doctorate in 1891 at the University of Leipzig to Dr. phil. From 1892 he ran the BG Teubner Verlag in Leipzig for five decades, initially together with his cousin Alfred Ackermann-Teubner , and later with his brother Konrad Giesecke and his nephew Martin Giesecke . From 1931 he was chairman of the supervisory board of Giesecke & Devrient AG .

Act

As a publisher, he devoted himself particularly to the subject of antiquity . The Bibliotheca Teubneriana , which has over 900 volumes , was expanded under his leadership, as was the Thesaurus Linguae Latina series published by five academic academies . With both projects he achieved the highest scientific recognition all over the world. In addition, he edited numerous individual publications by important representatives of classical antiquity.

With great financial sacrifices, Giesecke enabled the publication of the scientific periodicals Archive for Papyrus Research and Byzantine Journal .

A second major area of interest Giesecke was the humanities, especially philosophy, education, religious studies and German studies. Under his aegis, Teubner published the collected works of important scholars such as Wilhelm Dilthey and trend-setting pedagogues such as Hugo Gaudig , Georg Kerschensteiner and Theodor Litt .

After the untimely death of his brother Konrad, he also included the mathematical, scientific and technical fields in the publishing work. With compilations and series such as the Encyclopedia of Mathematics , the editions of the Norwegian mathematician Sophus Lie or the Swiss Leonhard Euler , Giesecke quickly made a name for himself as a publisher in this area in the professional world.

Giesecke's universal scholarship is reflected in the publication of 30 volumes, Die Kultur der Gegenwart . In this compilation, top scientists of the time pay tribute to modern cultural work in all areas around the world in a historical and systematic presentation. Due to the effects of the First World War, however, this edition was incomplete.

With the series From Nature and Spiritual World, which reached millions, Giesecke succeeded in popularizing the work of scientific research.

Giesecke also made great contributions to popular education through the development and expansion of the textbook section for all subjects and educational levels.

The internal expansion of the publishing house was shaped by the specialist scientific editors it set up, without which the enormous publishing activity would not have been possible.

In the now 200-year history of the Teubner publishing house, Alfred Giesecke is one of the most important and influential figures alongside the founder, BG Teubner.
