Christian Bau (born July 31, 1942 in Hamburg ) is a German film director , cameraman and film producer .

Life

Christian Bau trained as a photographer. From 1965 to 1969 he studied experimental film in Hamburg at the Hochschule für bildende Künste Hamburg (HfbK) with Wolfgang Ramsbott . In between, longer stays in Berlin at the Literary Colloquium. In 1970 and 1971 he worked as an assistant to Werner Nekes at the HfbK. In 1979 he was a founding member of the media center “Die Thede” in Hamburg Altona. In 1999 he founded “Thede Filmproduktion”.

The documentary filmmaker taught at the German Film and Television Academy in Berlin and the HfBK in Hamburg. In autumn 2010 Christian Baus' documentary film about the artist Jimmy Ernst with the title Zwiebelfische - Jimmy Ernst, Glückstadt / New York was released together with a bibliophile book. In 2011 he opened an exhibition at the Museum der Arbeit Hamburg: "Onion Fish, Jimmy Ernst & the Chinese Circle, Glückstadt-New York" with photos by Candida Höfer ".

Christian Bau is a member of the documentary film working group agdok and the Free Academy of Arts in Hamburg .

He is married to the filmmaker and editor Maria Hemmleb and they have a son together. He lives with her in Hamburg.
