Life
Christian von Bernstorff was a son of the Prussian administrative officer and later Mecklenburg district administrator Arthur von Bernstorff (1808-1897) and his wife Auguste Maria Crescentia von Miltitz (1815-1880). He attended the Johanneum Lüneburg and then completed a law degree with his younger brother Bechtold (1842–1895) at the universities in Göttingen and from 1862 in Rostock . After his doctorate as Dr. jur. he worked as a Grand Ducal Mecklenburg Chancellery Auditor in Schwerin and from 1868 as a Chancellery Assessor. In 1873 he was appointed Chamberlain of Mecklenburg-Strelitz. At the beginning of the 1880s he took his leave in the rank of government councilor and took over the Beseritz estate near Friedland in what is now the Mecklenburg Lake District , which his father had acquired in 1879. He was a member of the state parliament and was considered one of the best lawyers in Mecklenburg during his time. He was also a member of the Association for Mecklenburg History and Archeology . The owner's entails file comes from his hand .
Bernstorff was a particularist from Mecklenburg and was critical of the Wilhelmine Empire , which was dominated by Prussia ; In 1890 he was one of the founders of the conservative Mecklenburg Right-wing Party , which was close to the German-Hanoverian Party , but remained insignificant.
Christian von Bernstorff married in Doberan in 1867 Elisabeth von Arnim (1848–1913) from Favorithof , daughter of the chamberlain and hunting junker Ludwig Friedrich Bernhard von Arnim at Blücherhof and Favorithof (1803–1859) and Sophie von Levetzow at Koppelow (1824–1893) . The family had four children: Auguste Sophie Karoline Theodore (* 1868), Hedwig (* 1870), Ludwig Joachim Andreas Adolf Viktor (* 1871) and Marie Luise (* 1873).
