Christian Ernst Friedrich Graf (from 1764 changed to: Graaf , also Christian Ernst Graff , Christian Friedrich Graf ; born June 30, 1723 in Rudolstadt , † July 17, 1804 in The Hague ) was a German-Dutch conductor and composer .

Life

Graf was trained by his father Johann Graf , whom he succeeded in 1745 in the office of Hofkapellmeister in Rudolstadt. From 1762 he was Kapellmeister in the Netherlands in The Hague, from 1759 to 1790 he was court Kapellmeister to Willem V and Anna von Hannover. In 1764 Graf changed his name to the Dutch spelling Graaf.

He died in 1804 and is buried in the Grote Kerk in The Hague.

Graf has composed several symphonies , violin sonatas , string quartets , trio sonatas and quintets for flute and string quartet, two four-hand piano sonatas and fables for voice and piano ( "25 Fable dans le gout de la Fontaine, pour le Chant et le Clavecin" ). In 1782 he published the figured bass textbook "Proeve over de Natuur der Harmonie" in Dutch. Graf's song "Laat ons juichen Batavieren" served Mozart as a template for his Variations KV 24. In 1802 he composed the passion cantata "Der Tod Jesu" based on the text by Karl Wilhelm Richter (1725–1798).
