Christian Friedrich Georg Wilhelm Habich (born October 20, 1840 in Clausthal , † March 2, 1933 in Braunschweig ) was a German sculptor .

Life

The seventh of nine children of a miner family in Harz learned to be a miner at the age of 13. In his spare time Habich carved toys, which he also sold. The support from his superiors enabled him to work as a modeller in the Königshütte near Lauterberg from 1858 . He then worked in a furniture factory in Oderfeld. From 1863 to 1867 he received training at the Royal Polytechnic School in Hanover . He then worked in the local studio of the sculptor Friedrich Wilhelm Engelhardt . It was here that his first independent equestrian statue "Gottfried von Bouillon" was created. From 1867 to 1870 Habich was employed as a master model in the Ilsenburg ironworks before he returned to Hanover. After a short stay, he moved to Braunschweig in 1872 with his second wife, Friederike Hintze, who came from Braunschweig. There he worked as a freelance artist for over 50 years. In addition, he worked as a drawing teacher at schools in Braunschweig between 1873 and 1894. He belonged to the sociable association of clothing sellers around the poet Wilhelm Raabe . Habich was awarded the Order of Henry the Lion . His works found nationwide recognition. He died very old in 1933 in Braunschweig. The Wolfenbüttel State Archives keep his estate .

Habich created a variety of sculptures and sculptures, including equestrian statues and statuettes of members of the Braunschweig, Hanover and Imperial German nobility. An equestrian statuette of the Brunswick Duke Wilhelm was awarded a prize in Bad Harzburg in 1895 . His portrait busts of Braunschweig personalities became famous, including Heinrich Caspari , Carl Friedrich Gauß , Franz Abt and Heinrich Büssing . Habich's plants are located in Braunschweig, Hanover, Leipzig and Berlin.
