Christian Gottlieb Riccius (born January 12, 1697 in Bernstadt ad Eigen ; † November 2, 1784 ) in Göttingen was a German lawyer, legal scholar and publicist.

Life

Christian Gottlieb Riccius was the son of Christian Riccius (1650–1735), a citizen, cloth maker and councilor of Bernstadt and his wife Catharina Riccius (born around 1660–1694). He attended school in his hometown and in Zittau , then from 1716 he studied law at the University of Leipzig . After completing his studies, he lived for many years as an educator in various noble houses, soon as a lawyer from the Electorate of Saxony in Leipzig and Dresden , also Halle , Altorf and Berlin . In 1737 his first book came out under the title "Entwurff von dem Landesäßigen Nobility in Teutschland". In the same year another work was published to analyze the existing private law with the title "Specimen iuris publici germanici de praescriptionibus cum privilegio".

From 1740 he worked as a court master and educator for the Saxon-Gotha princes. During this time, too, other legal publications appeared, such as the “Statutes of the City Law” and a collection of legal texts under the title “Repertorium locupletissimum in JFPfeffingeri coepus iuris publici”. It was not until 1744 that Christian Gottlieb Riccius achieved a position as in-house counsel at the University of Göttingen and, with the establishment of new chairs, as an associate professor of law, in accordance with his learned inclinations and knowledge . Here he introduced academic lectures in the field of legal education. In 1747 he also became university secretary and from 1753 full professor with a focus on German private law. His retirement took place in 1767. But also in the time after that he was still scientifically active in the field of law and worked on important publications in the field of banking and finance law.

Christian Gottlieb Riccius died on November 2, 1784 at the age of 87 in Göttingen.

Scientific work

Christian Gottlieb Riccius worked mainly on the subject of German private law in the early years and was a respected representative of this science at that time. With his publications he provided a number of treatises and compilations in this field, which occasionally encroached on German constitutional law. This is particularly true of his more recent, pre-academic work. This included the repertory for Johann Friedrich Pfeffinger , Corpus iuris publici .

The best known work from his time at the University of Göttingen was the Spicilegium iuris Germanici ad JR Engau elementa iuris Germanici ex legibus, statutis et diplomatibus collectum . The XVII Exercitationes in ius cambiale formed the conclusion of his scientific activity , which represented a closed system of the bill of exchange , which was important for its epoch and also much appreciated at the time .
