Christian Hämmerle (born August 27, 1843 in Cannstatt ; † November 20, 1916 in Backnang ) was the city master builder in Murrhardt and later the chief master builder in Backnang.

Life

Hämmerle came from a family of vineyards in Cannstatt. At the age of 21, his father allowed him to train as a stonemason . During this time he worked on the Feuerbacher Tunnel, among other things . The completed training now allowed him to attend the Royal Building Trade School in Stuttgart , after which he went to Mannheim to build the railway . There he held the office of site manager at the Mannheim-Karlsruhe Rheinbahn. In 1871, the city of Murrhardt finally recruited him as a builder and freelance architect. Here he married the pharmacist's daughter Friederike Karoline Marie Horn.

In 1876 he moved to Backnang , where he spent the remaining three decades of his life as a master builder. As an architect of eclecticism , he built several dozen residential houses, factory buildings, but also sacred buildings and other major projects.

He was a co-founder of the antiquity association for Murrthal and the surrounding area , whose collection was exhibited in his villa. As the responsible route commissioner of the Reich Limes Commission , he led the excavations in the area of Fort Murrhardt in November and December 1892 .

In 1903 he bought the first automobile in Backnang. In the same year he was knighted.
