Christian Lorenz Sommer (born November 19, 1796 in Rudolstadt ; † July 20, 1846 there ) was a German classical philologist .

Life

Christian Lorenz Sommer was the son of a printer in Rudolstadt. He attended the community school and from 1807 the grammar school in his hometown , where he was particularly influenced by Abraham Voss and Bernhard Rudolf Abeken . After graduation, he went to the University of Göttingen at Easter 1814 , where he studied Protestant theology and classical philology. After two years he moved to the University of Leipzig to Gottfried Hermann and Christian Daniel Beck , who recommended him to a collaborator position at the Pforta State School after his 1817 exam . Sommer taught here for two years under the rector Karl David Ilgen .

In response to a call from his hometown, Sommer returned as a senior teacher at the Rudolstadt grammar school at Easter 1819, where he taught until his death despite several offers from abroad. His scientific and educational work was generally recognized and known beyond the borders of his place of work. In 1832 the Philosophical Faculty of the University of Jena awarded him an honorary doctorate.

During his years in Rudolstadt, Sommer stood out through several publications: he wrote critical editions of Plato's Symposium (1820), Xenophon's Anabasis (1821) and the Apollodorus Library (1822). In addition, he dealt with the Hecabe of Euripides (1836–1844) in four treatises and translated the beginning of the Aeneid into Greek (published posthumously).
