Christian Philipp Johann Alexander von Löwenstein-Wertheim (born January 11, 1719 in Wertheim in Baden, † May 23, 1781 buried in Lohr am Main ) was an Austrian general of the cavalry and bearer of the Grand Cross of the Maria Theresa Order .

The princely dignity came to the house on April 3, 1711 by the governor of Milan and his grandfather Maximilian Karl von Löwenstein-Wertheim-Rochefort (* July 14, 1656 - † December 26, 1718). His parents were Prince Dominicus Karl Marquard von Löwenstein-Wertheim-Rochefort (* November 7, 1690 - March 23, 1735) and his wife Christine Franziska Polyxena von Hessen-Rheinfels (* March 23, 1688 - June 17, 1828) . His father was murdered in Venice in 1735 . His brother Karl Thomas (* March 7, 1714; † June 6, 1789) was electoral field sergeant major and succeeded his father as prince. His brother Johann Josef Wenzel (* July 23, 1720, † January 17, 1788) became Major General of the Palatinate.

Life

He joined the army at a young age and took part in the Turkish War of 1737 . He was wounded in the Battle of Banja Luka, but was able to recommend himself through bravery and prudence. He rose in 1744 to colonel of the Dragoon Regiment Koháry . With this he fought first under Joseph Wenzel Laurenz Prince Liechtenstein , later under Johann Georg Christian Prince Lobkowitz in Italy.

In 1746 he succeeded in taking Serravalle with a piece of hussar. With a cavalry detachment he was able to advance unnoticed as far as Serravalle, where he surprised the Spaniards stationed there. They offered bitter resistance, but ultimately had to withdraw to the castle. On August 21, 1746, Colonel Spinola surrendered with 250 men and 13 guns. After the conquest of the Republic of Genoa , Löwenstein was sent to the Empress with the victory report. He accompanied General Count Colloredo to Vienna and returned later. In 1749 he was promoted to major general and on August 25, 1751 to field sergeant major.

At the beginning of the Seven Years' War he was the owner of a cuirassier regiment, which was disbanded shortly afterwards. On October 1, 1756, he was able to distinguish himself in the battle of Lobositz on the right wing. For this he was appointed field marshal lieutenant on December 5, 1757. In 1758 he was briefly the owner of the Dragoon Regiment No. 14 ("Löwenstein Dragoons"), but in 1759 he gave up the regiment again. Instead, he began in 1758 with the establishment of a chevaux layer , which later became the Uhlan Regiment No. 7 .

He received a commendation for his bravery in the Battle of Breslau (November 22, 1758). In 1760 he was appointed general of the cavalry. On August 2, 1762 he was able to defeat the Prussians in the battle near Teplitz. On November 21, 1763, the prince received the Grand Cross of the Maria Theresa Order for his bravery shown in the war.

He died on May 23, 1781 on a ship between Steinbach and Lohr am Main on the way home. His widow had an epitaph built in the church in Lohr.

He was married to Sebastiana Franziska von Humbert (* April 21, 1724 - November 21, 1793) from Püttlingen since April 5, 1773 . The couple had only one son, who died young.
