Prince Johann Georg Christian von Lobkowitz (born August 10, 1686 , † October 4, 1755 in Vienna ) was an Austrian field marshal .

Life

Lobkowitz , son of Prince Ferdinand August (1655–1715) and Maria Anna Wilhelmine, Margravine of Baden-Baden (1655–1701) and a grandson of Prince Wenzel Eusebius von Lobkowicz , served as a soldier for Emperors Joseph I , Charles VI. and Maria Theresa . He began his career under Prince Eugene of Savoy in the Spanish War of Succession and in 1716 in the Venetian-Austrian Turkish War . Lobkowitz married Caroline Henriette von Waldstein (1702–1780) in Prague on November 11, 1718, with whom he had ten children, and according to other sources eight children. With the extinction of the older Popel von Lobkowitz line , he inherited Bílina , Eisenberg in 1722 and became the founder of the second princely line, which died out in 1802. In 1729 he became general sergeant in Naples , in 1732 governor of Sicily , and in 1733 lieutenant field marshal . In 1734 he became general of the cavalry and in 1739 he commanded Transylvania and was appointed Knight of the Order of the Golden Fleece . In 1742, during the War of the Austrian Succession , he was named Field Marshal in Bohemia . From 1743 to 1745 he commanded Italy as governor in the Duchy of Milan and in Parma . He drove the Spaniards out of Rimini and returned to Bohemia in the Second Silesian War . Most recently he took command in Hungary. His son Philipp also embarked on a military career, was already a major at the age of 28 and died as such in the Seven Years' War on August 15, 1760 in the battle of Liegnitz .

The black African Angelo Soliman , who was well known at the time and came to Europe as a slave , was given to the prince around 1734. He used him as a valet , soldier and travel companion. Soliman saved his life in a battle, which may have been largely responsible for his future social position. After his death the body was exhibited in the Imperial Court Natural History Cabinet until 1806 .
