Christian Severin (Longomontanus)

Christian Severin (Danish Christian Sørensen ; born October 4, 1562 in Longberg, Jutland , Denmark; † October 8, 1647 ) was a Danish astronomer . He became known under the Latinized name Longomontanus .

Life

In 1589 he was employed by Tycho Brahe for astronomical observations and worked as his assistant. Johannes Kepler followed him in this position in October 1600.

From 1597 to 1602 Severin studied at the universities in Breslau , Danzig , Königsberg and finally Rostock , where he received his master's degree in 1598. In 1603 he became the principal of the school in Viborg . In 1605 he was elected professor at the University of Copenhagen , where he served four times as rector.

The lunar crater Longomontanus is named after him.
