Christian von Gehren

Christian von Gehren (born May 21, 1972 in Essen ) is a German conductor.

Life

Christian von Gehren studied conducting , piano playing and music theory at the Karlsruhe University of Music and at Det Kongelige Danske Music Conservatory in Copenhagen . He graduated with honors from both universities. His conducting teachers were Wolf-Dieter Hauschild and Michel Tabachnik . In 1993 von Gehren made his debut as an opera conductor with Weber's Der Freischütz at the Zwingenberg Castle Festival. As a student he was a répétiteur and assistant to Ulf Schirmer , Alberto Zedda and Marcello Viotti .

From 2001 to 2003 von Gehren was responsible for the musical direction of the Leipzig Opera as conductor and musical assistant to the artistic director . He rebuilt the ensemble and performed (unscheduled) Mendelssohn's only opera The Wedding of Camacho with the Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra . Freelance artist since 2004 , he has appeared at the Malmö Music Theater , the Munich Radio Orchestra , the Dortmund Opera and the Thessaloniki Opera. In 2005 he directed Bohuslav Martinů's opera Greek Passion in a guest performance at the Royal Opera House Covent Garden in Brno . Von Gehren has worked closely with the Bregenz Festival since 1999, where he most recently directed the Wiener Symphoniker in a series of performances of Puccini's Tosca .

The Schleswig-Holstein Music Festival , the Royal Opera (Copenhagen) , the Opéra National de Montpellier, the Opéra de Nice and - as part of a long-term collaboration - the Opéra Municipal de Marseille hired him. With contemporary repertoire he performed several times with the Norwegian ensemble BIT20 at the Bergen International Festival. From 2010 to 2015 Christian von Gehren worked at the Carl Orff Festival Andechs . The first recording of the music to Shakespeare's Midsummer Night 's Dream by Carl Orff was made under his direction . The Carl Orff Foundation awarded him the Carl Orff Prize in 2016 . Since the winter semester 2016/17 he has been teaching conducting at the Robert Schumann University in Düsseldorf . Since 2017 he has been chief conductor of the Jönköping Sinfonietta in Småland .
