Life

Christiane Mückenberger was born in 1928 (her year of birth was kept secret for a long time and first revealed it publicly on November 14, 2019) as the daughter of a lawyer in Gleiwitz . Due to his left-wing stance, he was the only non-Jewish lawyer who was excluded from the Silesian Bar Association in 1933 and emigrated to the Soviet Union .

Christiane Mückenberger studied Slavic Studies at the Humboldt University , received her doctorate in 1957 on " Lew Tolstoy in German literary criticism" and worked until 1962 at the Institute for Slavic Studies at the Academy of Sciences of the GDR . She discovered her love for film through her encounter with Sergei Eisenstein's film art and the new Polish film. The beginning of a new DEFA film, festivals and international encounters indicated a change in the GDR's understanding of the world and art that Mückenberger accepted as a challenge and obligation. In 1963 she became a member of the Institute for Film Studies, which had just opened, and took on a teaching position in the field of film history at the Babelsberg Film School .

Her turn to the politically explosive Czech films and her committed advocacy for the film The Rabbit I Am led to her dismissal without notice on December 22, 1965 because of “bourgeois skepticism without banks, which opens the door to nihilism”. She was thus one of the first in the film sector to fall victim to the regulations of the 11th plenum of the SED Central Committee . She was banned from attending the film school, was banned from participating in the international documentary film festival in Leipzig and was banned from working for 10 years. Her husband Jochen Mückenberger (1926–2020), who was the general director of the DEFA feature film studio, was also dismissed due to his work.

So until 1975 she worked as a translator and translated texts from Russian (including Eisenstein) and Polish (including the story of Jerzy Toeplitz's film ). In 1968, together with Wolfgang Klaue , she wrote the first concept for a film museum in the GDR, which opened in 1981 as Germany's first film museum.

After re-admission to teaching and research, she focused on the history of DEFA and the involvement of students in research, which resulted in two documentaries. Together with Günter Jordan , she wrote the script for the documentary about the beginnings of film in East Germany: DEFA: Roots .

In 1990 she was appointed director of the International Leipzig Festival for Documentary and Animated Film . She saw it as her obligation to maintain this festival itself and its cosmopolitan spirit, especially the view that was open to the east. In 1993 she was able to give up this task and at the age of 65 took over tasks in trade union work in the IG Medien on the subject of women and as a guest lecturer at the University of Television and Film Munich , the University of Leipzig and Frankfurt / Main.

In the Ostdeutscher Rundfunk Brandenburg , recorded in the cinema of the Filmmuseum Potsdam, she introduced the series of re-encounters with DEFA films to the series for several years and gave the series face and voice.

Christiane Mückenberger has published extensively on domestic and foreign filmmaking.

At the event of the Filmmuseum Potsdam on November 14, 2019 in honor of Christiane Mückenberger, the President of the Babelsberg Film University, Prof. Dr. Susanne Stürmer , Christiane Mückenberger's achievements for film, film history in general and the Babelsberg Film University in particular, as outstanding.

Christiane Mückenberger lives in Potsdam-Babelsberg.
