Christiane North

Christiane Nord (* 13. September 1943 in Eberswalde as Christiane Prahst ) is a German translation scientist . She taught at various universities and colleges such as the University of Heidelberg , the University of Vienna and the Magdeburg-Stendal University of Applied Sciences . The focus of her work and teaching is translatology and translation didactics.

Life

Nord graduated from the New Language High School in Delmenhorst in 1963 and graduated in 1967 as a qualified translator for Spanish and English at the Institute for Translation and Interpreting at the Ruprecht-Karls-Universität Heidelberg . Nord obtained her doctorate in 1983 with magna cum laude in the subjects of Hispanic Studies and Translation Studies at the New Philology Faculty of Heidelberg University with a thesis on the latest developments in Spanish vocabulary. Nord completed his habilitation in applied translation studies and translation didactics at the humanities faculty of the University of Vienna in 1992 with a thesis on the translation of titles and headings.

Nord was married to Klaus Berger until his death in June 2020 and has two children. Nord translated parts of the Bible together with her husband.

Career

From 1967 to 1996, Nord was a lecturer in the Spanish department of the Institute for Translation and Interpreting at Heidelberg University. From 1991 to 1992 she held a visiting professorship at the Institute for Translation and Interpreter Training at the University of Vienna in the field of general translation studies and Spanish translation studies, for which she was given leave of absence from teaching at Heidelberg University. Another leave of absence took place from 1994 to 1996 as part of a professorship at the University of Hildesheim . In 1996 and 1997, Nord held a visiting professorship at the Institute for Translation and Interpreter Training at the University of Innsbruck .

From 1996 to 2005 she held a professorship for applied linguistics and specialist translation (Spanish) in the communication and media department at the Magdeburg-Stendal University of Applied Sciences and was also responsible for teaching Spanish . Here she was also Vice Rector for Research and Teaching from 1998 to 2000. In addition, Nord accepted a large number of different DAAD short-term lectureships during this period, for example in Asia ( India , Indonesia , Jordan , Thailand etc.), Latin America ( Argentina , Brazil , Chile etc.) and South Africa and Russia . In the 2001 winter semester, Nord held a teaching position at Saarland University in Saarbrücken , before she retired from active university service in 2005.

Since 2007 she has been visiting professors at various universities, including, for example, Nankai University in Beijing , People's Republic of China or the Nida School for Translation Studies in Italy . Since 2008, Nord has also been an honorary professor at the Facultade de Filoloxía at the University of Vigo in Spain . From March 2013 to January 2014, Nord held a chair at the Center for Translation Studies at the University of Vienna in Austria .

In her work, Nord has researched some of the fundamental principles for translatology and the translation process and thematized them in her publications, thus contributing to the progress of translation studies . Two of Nord's best-known models are, on the one hand, the circular scheme and the translation-relevant text analysis based on the "W questions", with which text-external and text-internal factors of a text can be analyzed.
